Part 49 Colossians 4:7-18 “The Fellowship of the Kingdom”

Intro: I read a story once about a cadet at the Air Force Academy doing research for a paper on Medal of Honor winners. He was shocked to discover the name of someone he personally knew…a janitor at the academy that the cadets knew and loved. There was much about him to consider and learn from, which is also true about the list at the end of Colossians.

Let’s take a look:

READ: 4:7-18

I. Seven Examples to Consider

A. Tychicus

Beloved  brother (kindred spirit)

Faithful minister (an others mindset)

Fellow servant (common mission)

B. Onesimus

Runaway bond servant of Philemon (Phil. 10)

Faithful follower returning to Archippus

C. Aristarchus

Fellow traveler with Paul in hardship to Rome

Early faithful friend through the Ephesus riots, etc.

Close friend helping provide for his needs

D. Luke

Also fellow traveler with Paul in hardship to Rome

Used his many professional gifts for Kingdom work

Eventually writing a gospel account and Acts

E. John Mark (Mark)

Cousin of Barnabas (early leader before Paul)

Abandoned Paul on the first missionary journey

Now back and faithfully serving (second chance)

Eventually writing The Gospel of Mark

F. Epaphras

Gentile/founder of the church at Colossae

Dear faithful servant of Jesus (1:7)

Faithful prayer warrior

Always – (frequent and deliberate)

Fervently – (like aggressive athletic training)

Specific – (naming people/end goals in mind)

G. Demas

Fellow laborer at Rome

Abandoned Paul and the ministry

(“having loved this present world” 2 Tim. 4:10)

II. Take Aways from the Fellowship

A. Character traits Paul highlighted

A faithful heart to the Lord

A servant attitude toward others

A use of skill set for Kingdom work

A purposeful posture of prayer

B. A warning from the list (Demas)

Close proximity to Paul wasn’t enough to save him

Love of the world is always a danger (1 Jn 2:15-17)

C. An encouragement from the list (Mark)

Failure is often part of the journey

Reconciliation is to be part of the fellowship

God uses us in spite of our weaknesses/failures

III. Conclusion

Discussion: What are some specifics from the list that stand out?

Challenge: May we live empowered by the Holy Spirit this week to be faithful servants as these men were.

Part 48 Colossians 4:2-6 “Final Instructions”

Intro: In Paul’s writing, he often presented specific teaching and encouragement, while also including rebuke and challenge when needed. Overall, there was always a purpose to his writing. Here at the end of the letter to the church at Colossae, he includes a few lines of final instructions. In verse 2, we get the word “continue”, which provides the general directive of “as you go”, remember these things. They give us the framework of a general disposition and expectation of the Lord.

Let’s take a look:

READ: 4:2-6

I. The Characteristics of our Prayers (v.2-4)

A. Pray earnestly (devote) – to be persistent

(this is a consistent attitude-“without ceasing”)

B. Pray vigilantly (with alertness) – actively aware

(like Nehemiah did with the building)

C. Pray thankfully (gratitude) – mindful of blessings

(keeping perspective of God’s gracious provisions)

D. Pray purposefully (v.3)

(for doors to be opened for God’s purposes)

(for empowerment to speak the truth properly)

II. The Characteristics of our “Walk” (v.5)

A. We are to walk in wisdom

(specifically to those outside of the faith)

B. We are to walk in good stewardship of time (redeem)

(each day is a dated certificate to be “redeemed”)

III. The Characteristics of our Speech (v.6)

A. Our words are to be gracious

(edges may need rounded, or words held altogether)

B. Our words are to be seasoned

(for taste-appropriate amounts)

(for healing-salt as a cleanser)

(for preservation-proactively applied)

C. Our words are to be guided by the Holy Spirit

(measured and “fitly spoken”-Proverbs 25:11)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: What are some things involved in walking wisdom to those outside?

Challenge: May we live empowered by the Holy Spirit this week to be mindful of these “as we go”.

Part 47 Colossians 3:18-4:1

“The Family Circle”

Intro: In the world of “news”, there is an ever-growing use of pull-quotes and sound bites to shape narratives and drive internet traffic. Often times, they are out of context, or purposely dishonest.

The next section contains verses sometimes quoted out of context for various reasons. While they are inherently true as stand-alone teaching, they are part of Paul’s overall presentation of living life in a way that honors Christ in all circles.

Let’s first take a look at the details:

READ: 3:18-4:1

I. The Institution of the Christian Home

A. The home is God’s design

(man/woman are made to complement each other)

B. The home is God ordained

(the home is blessed of God and a sacred institution)

(the strength of any society rests on it)

II. The Values of the Christian Home (v.18-21)

Note: Written specifically to believers

A. Wives-the concept of submission

(equal value, specific roles)

B. Husbands-the concept of agape´ love

(all the specifics of I Corinthians 13)

C. Children-the concept of obedience

D. Fathers (or parents)-the concept of Godly interaction

(loving correction, patience and encouragement)

III. The Opportunities of Service (v.22-23)

Note: Bondservants-estimated 60 million in the 1st Century

A. Christlikeness in the role of service (even w/o oversight)

B. Christlikeness in any other role/service (as to the Lord)

IV. The Accountability of All (v.24-4:1)

A. The standard is/will be “we serve(d) the Lord” (v.24,4:1)

B. He is mindful of our service (v.25,4:1)

(He is Master and cares about just/fair)

V. Conclusion

Discussion: Which are the top cultural challenges to this list and why are they often opposed/mischaracterized?

Challenge: May we live empowered by the Holy Spirit this week to honor Christ in all of our circles.

Part 46 Colossians 3:12-17

“Actionable Words for the ‘Set Apart’”

Intro: Recently, there was a prominent news story about a change in CEO for major a corporation. When the news broke, their stock jumped, but after some time, there will have to be actionable plans to get the company back on track (not just hype, hope, or theory).

In the previous section (v.1-11) we considered three action words regarding our mindset, which were seek, set, and reckon. Today, we’re considering points Paul gave that are actionable terms. In other words, these are specific points to be acted upon and not just relegated to theoretical minutia.

Let’s first take a look at the details:

READ: 3:12-17

I. “Put on”: Be a Pleasant Presence (v.12-14)

NOTE: “As” (since you are chosen, set apart and loved…) (v.12)

A. Put on Tender mercies

(someone pleasing to be around)

B. Put on Kindness and humility

(someone thinking of others first and showing it)

C. Put on Meekness, long-suffering and forbearance

(strength under control and delaying reaction)

D. Put on Forgiveness

(because Christ forgave us…no room for excuses)

RE-READ: v.15-16

II. “Let”: Embrace God’s Guidance (v.15-16)

A. Let the peace of God rule

(athletic term-umpire-His peace is the standard)

(not an absence of conflict but “heart peace”)

B. Let the Word dwell in you and among you richly

(personal-learning, maturing, song in our heart)

(corporately-teaching, admonishing, guiding)

RE-READ: v.17

III. “Do”: Honor Christ in Speech and Actions (v.17)

A. We are to be good stewards of our time/talent/resources

(not just passively but actively)

B. We are to give thanks in the process

(at all stages of the process…a grateful attitude)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: Where are some difficulties in moving from theory to action and how have you experienced success?

Challenge: May we live as those “set apart” this week by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Part 45 Colossians 3:1-11 “Life from Above”

Intro: When I arrived at basic training, there were some personal decisions to be made about who I was going to be. In other words, what was going to determine my personal guiding principles. In our walk of faith, we have to determine the same things…what is going to be our guiding principles.

In the next section, Paul provides us with additional principle and application” regarding our walk in light of the perfect work of Christ.

Let’s first take a look at the details:

READ: 3:1-7

I. A Mindset from Above (v.1-7)

NOTE: “If” (since you were raised with Christ) (v.1)

Three action words…

A. Seek those things from above (v.1)

(envision that reality)

B. Set your mind on things above (v.2)

(determine…to meditate on Phil. 4:8 things)

C. Reckon (put) yourself dead to these things (v.5)

(a cognitive decision to render the flesh “dead”)

(glory is a delayed reality…not now/but then – v.4)

II. Understanding from Above (v.6-7)

A. We were all originally part of the disobedience (v.7)

(forgiven and transformed by grace)

B. God’s view of rebellion/sin has not changed (v.6)

(it has not become ok with time)

READ: v.8-11

III. Changes from Above (v.8-11)

A. We are to “put-off” (actively reject certain things) (v.8-9)

B. We are to “put-on” the new man (v.10)

(contrast with the world-more to come in v.12-17)

C. We are to be “renewed” in knowledge (v.10)

(“put-off”, “put-on” transactional, “renew” is ongoing)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: Where do you see the most pointed contrasts in the “Mindset from Above”?

Challenge: May we truly live in the mindset from above this week by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Part 44 Colossians 2:11-23 “The Perfect Work of Christ”

Intro: The life of faith is filled with questions. Often the questions are without easy answers, however when it comes to foundational principles, we have much in the scriptures to help us determine what they are. In this next section, Paul presents the premise for our life in Christ, and what that means regarding our approach to daily living.

Let’s first take a look at the details of the premise:

READ: 2:11-15

I. The Perfect Work of Christ (v.11-15)

A. Our hearts have been changed (v.11)

(circumcised-as mentioned often in the O.T.)

B. Our old self has been buried (v.12)

(permanently, with no return)

C. We have been raised from the grave (v.12)

(by faith and not by anything of ourselves)

D. We have been made alive in Him (v.13)

(fully alive, there is no better/higher experience)

E. We have been forgiven of our sin (v.13)

G. We have been freed from the Law’s requirements (v.14)

H. He made a public display of our enemies’ defeat (v.15)

(similar picture as 2 Corinthians 2:12-17)

READ: v.16-23

II. Living Life Based on Christ’s Perfect Work (v.16-23)

Note: “So” or “therefore” is the pivot or hinge

(so…based on 11-15)

A. Don’t fall for self-imposed religion (v. 16-17, 23)

(mix of rules, holidays, etc.)

B. Don’t fall for “false humility”

(misplaced emphasis creating pride)

C. Don’t fall for asceticism (v.21-22)

(of no value v.23)

D. Focus on Christ and His work (v.19)

(He gives the increase, defines the life)

III. Conclusion

Discussion: What are the challenges to avoiding these “traps”? How do we succeed in navigating around them?

Challenge: May we truly live in the freedom of Christ this week by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Part 43 Colossians 2:1-10 “Appropriating the Riches”

Intro: I love old cars. I’ve known people over the years that have classic cars. As a matter of fact, some of them are of great value (examples). However, I’ve observed that some keep cars that they never drive (for various reasons) and some keep only those they’re willing to drive. In Paul’s word pictures of mystery, riches, treasure, etc. there’s not only the descriptions for the purpose of knowledge and awareness, there’s encouragement for each believer to “appropriate” them into daily life. In other words, they aren’t for collecting and placing on a pedestal, they’re for climbing into and “driving”. After all, it would be a real shame to have a classic Camaro or Mustang and never drive it.

Let’s take a look at what he wrote:

READ: 2:1-10

I. Paul Affirmed Their General Disposition (v.5)

A. He had learned of their ways and reputation

(had not planted them or visited there)

B. They maintained “good order”

(military term for ranks, battle array)

C. They were “steadfast”

(another military term for solid unity in battle)

D. They were not in disorder, conflict or division

(as some early churches were)

II. Paul Shared His Hope for Them (v.1-3, 6-7)

A. He wanted them to be:

– Encouraged (a positive posture inside) (v.2)

– Woven together in love (knitted) (v.2)

– Assured by understanding (to know) v.2)

– Assured by knowing the source (Father/Son) (v.2)

B. He wanted them to walk

– As ones established (with healthy deep roots) (v.7)

– As ones trusting what they had been taught (v.7)

III. Paul Warned of the Enemy’s Tactics (v.4, 8-10)

A. There will be active persuasion (v.4)

(like a well-crafted sales presentation)

B. The enemy wants to “cheat” us out of riches (v.8)

(sometimes rendered plunder-stealing our treasure)

C. Their points are based on the fallen world’ rationale

(points widely accepted, celebrated by others)

D. The end result of rejecting these truths is Rev. 3:14-22

(Laodicea mentioned in Col. 2:1)

(it was located between

– cold springs of Colossae and hot springs of Hierapolis

(the city was known for eye salve and ear and v.18)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: What similarities are there between now and the Laodicean church? How do we work against it?

Challenge: May we truly appropriate the richness of Christ this week by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Part 42 Colossians 1:24-29 “Understanding the Riches”

Intro: There is a television show where “pickers” go around the country looking for items to purchase and resale. Occasionally, the pickers will discover something that the seller underprices because he/she is unaware of its rarity and value. For integrity’s sake (real or portrayed for the show), the pickers will inform the seller and offer a “fair” price.

In this section, Paul is attempting to inform the believers at Colossae of the true richness of the mystery they possess.

Let’s take a look:

READ: 1:24-29

I. Explanation of the Sufferings (v.24-25)

A. Paul was called of God (he had a mission to complete)

(God was in charge of the events)

B. His suffering was for the sake of the Body of Christ

(not God’s punishment for sin or heresy)

C. His mission was primarily among Gentiles

II. The Blessing of the Hidden Mystery (v.26-27)

A. It was hidden across the ages

(but now revealed to those following Christ)

B. There is great richness in the glory of the mystery

(it is Christ Himself in them/us-treasure 2 Cor. 4:7)

C. Christ in us is the very definition of hope

(a solid, sure, eternal positive view of the future)

III. The Purpose of the Work in the Meantime (v.28-29)

A. We are to preach Jesus (specifically by name)

B. We are to warn everyone willing to hear

         (of the whole truth)

C. We are to teach everyone will to hear

         (making disciples with foundational truths)

D. We are to present those we influence/disciple “perfect”

         (complete, mature)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: What are some of the “riches” of the mystery that we can easily overlook or forget?

Challenge: May we truly live in awareness of the richness of Christ this week by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Part 41 Colossians 1:19-23 “Fullness”

Intro: Over the last two weeks we’ve discussed the concept of being “filled” (ballasted) and now we turn our thoughts toward the idea of “fullness”. It was a specific term and selling point of the gnostic teaching which they presented as “the sum total of all the divine power and attributes” (Wiersbe). In other words, one is incomplete and unfulfilled without the additional understanding. However, Paul used their own verbiage to illustrate the grand eternal truth of the Trinity and what it means for those of us in Christ.

Let’s take a look:

READ: 1:19-23

I. The Truth about “Fullness” (v.19-20)

A. God was pleased for all the fullness to dwell in Christ

(He embodies the power and attributes of God)

B. God was pleased for the reconciliation to be by Him

(for the credit and glory to be Jesus’)

(“in whom I am well-pleased”)

C. God was pleased that peace was made through Him

(which means there wasn’t peace but hostility)

(instead of something punitive toward humanity)

II. We Were Born Separated from the Fullness (v.21a)

A. We were “alienated”, completely removed

(there was no hope of “being with” the fullness)

B. The flesh is naturally in an enemy-with-God mindset

(the fleshly, worldly, carnal mind-Romans 8)

(it is what produces wicked works)

III. We are to be Presented in Fullness (v.21b-23)

A. We are reconciled from that status (enemies of God)

(in Christ through His suffering/death/resurrection)

B. We are to be presented in the fullness of Christ

(holy, blameless, above reproach)

C. There is dependency on the “if” in v.23

(not for salvation but for the fullness)

D. Which means we are to…

(continue in the faith)

(stay grounded in the gospel’s hope)

(be steadfast and unmoved from the gospel’s hope)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: What specific challenges are there to living in the fullness of Christ? How may there be misunderstandings of what it is?

Challenge: May we truly live in the fullness of Christ this week by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Part 40 Colossians 1:13-18 “Core Doctrinal Statements”

Intro: Last week we focused on Paul’s use of being “filled” as the word picture of ballasting in the hold of ship (which gives it steadiness in rough seas). The verses afterward continue to add more “ballasting” with doctrinal statements about the Person of Jesus to counter the heretical gnostic teachings. With their attempt to deemphasize Jesus, Paul sought to specifically bring awareness to the foundational, eternal truths about Him.

Let’s take a look:

READ: 1:13-18

I. Jesus Has Delivered Us (v.13-14)

A. From the power of darkness (v.13a)

(not just darkness but its power)

B. Transferred us into His kingdom (v.13b)

(original wording-relocating conquered people)

C. By redemption in His blood (v.14)

(forgiveness paid for by His blood sacrifice)

II. Jesus is the Physical Presence of God (v.15-16)

A. Jesus reflects the Father in every way (v.15a)

B. Jesus has the status of “eldest” (firstborn) (v.15b)

C. Jesus is the Creator of all things (v.16a)

(Ancient of Days, preexisted before anything v.17)

D. Jesus is sovereign over ALL leaders/organizations etc.

III. Jesus is the Head of the Church (v.18)

NOTE: “Head” is the position of authority

A. Firstborn (eldest son) of the grave

(led the way for us in defeat of death)

B. He has preeminence, not just prominence

(surpassing all others-not just high among others)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: How are these statements being challenged today? How do they help us in our daily walk?

Prayer/Challenge: May we incorporate these truths in our lives this week.

Part 39 Colossians 1:9-12 “Filled”

Intro: As Paul continued with his thoughts regarding the church at Colosse, he pivoted from the many affirming words he used to describe them, to what he prayerfully hoped was next for them.

Let’s take a look:

READ: 1:9-12

NOTE: “For this reason” (v.9) is the basis for the specifics of the  prayer (since they are receptive of truth/fruitful).

This is actually what it means to “go the next level” as opposed to what the Gnostic teachers were peddling.

Paul used many of the same terms but in their true spiritual definition and not as part of a “mystical experience”.

I. That You May be Filled (v.9)

NOTE:Filled” is the picture of a ship loaded/ballasted

(value and steadiness in the ocean)

A. With knowledge from the Lord of His will

(general and specific will)

B. With wisdom from the Lord

(seeing life/pursuits/events from His perspective)

C. With spiritual understanding from the Lord

(insight/discernment based on spiritual realities)

II. That You may Walk Worthy of the Lord (v.10)

NOTE: The natural question is, “What is worthy?” which he then answered:

A. Worthy walking is pleasing Him

B. Worthy walking is being fruitful in good works

C. Worthy walking is increasing in knowledge of God

III. That You May be Strengthened by His Power (v.11)

A. Strengthened for patience with joy

(deciding to take circumstances as they come)

B. Strengthened for endurance with joy

(deciding to take people as they come)

IV. That You May also be Giving Thanks (v.12)

A. Thankful that He has qualified us

B. Thankful that He has given us an inheritance

V. Conclusion

Discussion: What are your thoughts on how the picture of these things are a “ballast” for life? And what are the challenges?

Prayer/Challenge: May we “walk worthy of the Lord” this week.

Part 38 Colossians 1:1-8 “Affirmation”

Intro: The church at Colosse was likely an outgrowth of Paul’s 3-year stay at Ephesus. He didn’t plant them, but was tied to them through Epaphras. Their beginning was solid and Paul strongly affirms them, however, a threat from false teaching had infiltrated their fellowship (many philosophies in Colosse where East meets West).

Context: The primary threat were the Gnostics (those “in the know”) which was a heretical mixture of eastern philosophy, pagan astrology, mysticism, Jewish legalism, asceticism, and Christianity.

Note: Sophistry-“clever but deceptive reasoning”

(sophistication)

Let’s take a look at the opening:

READ: 1:1-8

I. Their Faith was Genuinely Placed in Christ (v.4a)

A. The Person of Christ specifically

(not His teachings or an ideal)

B. His redemptive work specifically

(forgiveness of sin, not just following/being better)

II. Their Brotherly Love was Real (v.4b)

A. Their love was truly for others

B. Their love was generated by transformed hearts

III. Their Hope was Based on the Truth of the Word (v.5)

Note: “laid up” – a financial term related to money set aside

A. Their hope was forward-looking

(focus was beyond the moments)

B. Their hope was secure in Christ appearing/in heaven

(an assured promise, not just “I hope it is”)

IV. Their Faith, Hope & Love was Producing Fruit (v.6,8)

A. Common love in the Spirit of God

(not just a common pursuit, lifestyle, etc.)

B. The fruit reflected all three-faith, hope, love

(Their authenticity was making a difference)

V. Conclusion

Discussion: What parallels do you see to our time now?

Prayer/Challenge: May we walk in the contentment of the Lord this week.

Part 37 Philippians 4:10-23 “Learning Contentment”

Intro:

As Paul began to wrap up his thoughts to the Philippians, he drew attention to their generosity. As he commended them, in verse 10, he also took the opportunity for teaching by providing a “parenthesis” statement regarding what he’s “learned” to go with it in verses 11-13. Often times, verse 13 is quoted as a stand-alone text, but there is much richness to its surrounding context and insight to spiritual maturity.

Let’s take a look:

READ: 4:10-23

I. The Principle of Contentment (v.11)

A. “Learned” in v.11 – a working knowledge

B. It takes time – the collating of moments/experiences

C. Content – term commonly used by Stoics

(“self-sufficiency” but clearly tied/clarified to/by v.13)

(Our culture is geared to generate discontent)

(Marketing-the art of creating discontent/motivation)

II. The “How-to” of Contentment (v.12-13)

A. “Learned” in v.12 – receiving knowledge of a secret

B. v.13 – Him in Christ/Christ in Him-a constant relationship

(the state of contentment as an on-going reality)

C. The “abounding” can be the most challenging

III. Contentment that Benefits Others (v.17-19)

A. His contentment led to more interest in their benefit

(He was grateful for their “return on investment”

B. He commended their selfless gesture with specifics

(The right offering-“sweet smelling aroma”)

(The right effort-“acceptable sacrifice”)

(The right motive-“well pleasing”)

C. God will replenish their resources (v.19)

(another verse often pulled out as stand-alone)

(it’s based on God’s purposes and providence)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: What are some specific points of difficulty in arriving at the mindset of what Paul described? How does verse 13 help us?

Prayer/Challenge: May we walk in the contentment of the Lord this week.

Part 36 Philippians 4:8-9 “Deep Thoughts, Visible Lives”

Intro: I’ve always been intrigued with stories/movies that begin with the ending (or elements of the ending), and then go back and fill in the story. For example, the mentioning of “Rosebud” at the beginning of “Citizen Kane”.

In verse 7, Paul put forth the premise of the “peace of God” and then gives us the beautiful “back story” in verses 8-9a.

Let’s take a look at what he wrote:

READ: 4:8-9

I. The “Whatevers” (v.8)

A. The mental posture-thinking drives emotions…

(proactively comparing and making judgements)

A. Whatever is true (biblically, fundamentally true)

B. Whatever is noble (honorable)

C. Whatever is just (right)

D. Whatever is pure (Godly wholesome)

E. Whatever is lovely (Godly attractive)

F. Whatever is of good report (worthy of repeating)

G. Whatever is virtuous (morally excellent)

H. Whatever is praiseworthy (directs praise to God)

II. The “Doings” (v.9)

A. You have both learned and received

(learned-gained the knowledge of)

(received-considered and internalized)

(meditate-the process of doing both-take time)

B. You have both heard and seen

(Paul’s model-speaking and doing)

C. You experience the peace of God in the “and”

(in the process of doing-as imperfect as it may be)

III. Conclusion

Discussion: Which ones of the “whatevers” are most rejected (or corrupted) by the culture we live in now? How do we best avoid/counter that?

Prayer/Challenge: May we pursue “deep thinking” on these truths this week.

Part 35 Philippians 4:1-7 “Seven Decisions for Peace”

Intro: While anxiety is not something new to humanity, it is a frequent subject of conversation and research in our current culture. Regardless of one’s opinion about about modern life and the various sources of discontent, there are general instructions related to it within the body of Christ from Paul for us to consider.

Let’s take a look at what he wrote and how it applies to us:

READ: 4:1-7

“4 Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved. I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. 3 [a]And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life. Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! Let your [b]gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” – Phil. 4:1-7 NKJV

I. Decide to Stand Fast in the Lord (v.1)

NOTE:in the Lord” is a key phrase in I, II, & III

A. “Stand fast” is a military term/command

(we must commit to our position for the duration)

B. It’s not about flash, or “notable” moments of offensive moves

(it’s about being where He wants us to stand – “in the Lord”)

II. Decide to Find Common Ground in the Lord (v.2-3)

A. What they were disputing about is not relevant

(there are always going to be disagreements)

B. The spiritually mature are to be proactive

(How can we find resolution “in the Lord”?)

C. Pride/self-interests must be kept in-check

III. Decide to Focus on what is Good in the Lord (v.4)

A. Purpose to identify what is good “in the Lord”

(general things, big things, personal/daily things)

B. Purpose to speak of them quietly and out loud

(prayers back to Him and conversation with others)

IV. Decide to be Visibly Gracious to Others (v.5)

A. By definition, graciousness is “unearned” by others

B. The Lord is closely involved “at hand” or “near”

V. Decide to Have an Attitude of Thankfulness (v.6a)

NOTE:Worry is the greatest thief of joy” – W. Wiersbe

A. Jesus taught to remember God’s provisions (Matt. 6)

(a specific reminder that He is always aware)

B. A generally grateful spirit expects/receives differently

(see timing, specifics, and direction through that lens)

VI. Decide to Talk to God about Everything (v.6b)

A. Worship, praise, remembrance, thanks, routine activities

B. Petitions, hopes, guidance, intercessions

VII. Decide to Let God Defend Your Heart/Mind (v.7)

NOTE: It’s beyond understanding and “through Christ”

A. “Guard” is the picture of a “defended post”

(with boundaries and continuous sentry activity)

B. “Peace” is a mental/spiritual rest because of Him

(But we can’t work against Him and expect peace)

VIII. Conclusion

Discussion: Which one of the decisions is the most stubborn to maintain? What helps with maintaining?

Prayer/Challenge: May we live this week in an attitude of choosing to stand fast in the Lord.

Part 34 Philippians 3:17-21 “Living in Contrast”

Intro: Personal story about living in Germany (contrast of soldiers to locals)

At the opposite end of that was missional camouflage, eliminating the “contrasts”.

Paul described what “living in contrast” looked like. Let’s take a look at what he wrote and how it applies to us:

READ: 3:17-21

I. The Pattern of Following (v.17)

NOTE:Follow me as I follow Christ.”

A. There is the obvious-a timeless pattern exists

(and it doesn’t “evolve” with each generation)

B. A follower is to be proactive- “join in following

(to be seeking/applying the truth)

C. A follower is to identify those to “esteem” (2:29)

(evaluate/discover based on the scriptures)

D. It is for daily kinds of moments (not theoretical)

II. The Pattern of Destruction (v.18-19)

A. The result of their pursuits is “a waste”

(and those following their pattern)

B. Their Jewish diet had become idolatrous

(“whose god is their belly”)

(originally good but used to promote themselves)

C. Circumcision had become an obsession

(“who glory in their shame”)

(used as the standard in spite of God’s words)

D. Their values were defined by worldly standards

(appetites of the flesh-pride, recognition, power)

III. The Pattern of Patience (v.20-21)

NOTE: Philippi was a Roman colony/citizenship mattered

A. Our “passport” shows we are currently traveling

(not “home” going “away”, but “away” going “home”)

B. Our home country has values, norms, expectations, etc.

C. Our King will welcome us home or come get us Himself

D. We will be transformed to match Him/home

E. He will set all things in proper order (His order)

(“subdue all things”)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: What are some “contrasts” you see in your daily activities? How do we maintain the contrast?

Prayer/Challenge: May we be comfortable/confident in being in contrast to our surroundings.

Part 33 Philippians 3:12-16 “The Race of Life”

Intro: In this section, Paul used athletics to illustrate the mindset of accomplishing verse 10. It could have meant a foot or chariot race. Either way, the details are meant to help us focus and succeed.

Let’s take a look at what he wrote:

READ: 3:12-16

Today, there are four reminders for us to consider:

I. The Purpose of Racing (v.12)

A. Pressing on toward “that”

(a proactive seeking-decidedly moving forward)

B. “That” is why Jesus “laid hold of us”

(to become a faithful follower-not accomplishments)

II. The Perspective of Racing (v.13)

A. The “one thing”

(narrowing the focus)

B. Forward-looking-literally straining forward

(make the next checkpoint close, streetlight in a 5k)

C. Past “forgetting”

(neutralizing the presence/power of the past)

(it’s there, but it’s been dealt with)

III. The Prize of Racing (v.14)

A. There is a prize-a final tally will be done

(not an “everyone-gets-a-trophy” type deal)

B. The prize is according to His calling

(“Well done good and faithful servant”)

IV. The Procedure of Racing (v.15-16)

A. The methods are important

(Christlikeness and His teachings, not legalism)

B. God is the one Who reveals them

(The Word as revealed)

(The Holy Spirit revealing according to His Word)

V. Conclusion

Discussion: Which reminder seems the most helpful?

Prayer/Challenge: May we be leaning forward for His purposes this week as Paul described.

Part 32 Philippians 3:11-11 “Well-Placed Confidence”

Intro: We live in a time when it’s getting more difficult to know what is real. For example, expensive clothing online can be counterfeits, social media posts can be fabricated and “homework assignments” can be done by AI.

Paul confessed that he was previously pursuing something that was not real…effort produced righteousness (no matter how sincerely he pursued it). He then provides a better approach and a picture of the goal to pursue.

Let’s take a look:

READ: 3:1-11

I. Circumcision is Now Spiritual not Physical (v.3)

A. Originally represented a people set apart after Abraham

(Abraham justified before it, then identified by it)

B. Steven called the Jews “uncircumcised” in heart/ears

(Acts 7:51-always resisting the Holy Spirit)

C. Now represents a heart/life set apart

(worshipping in the Holy Spirit)

II. Confidence is to be in Christ not Virtue (v.8)

A. Law of Moses then, danger of “moral” justification now

(both based on what we can do)

B. Paul “counted” the old pursuits “rubbish”

(he saw the futility of it all)

III. It’s “Righteousness” versus Righteousness (v.9)

A. Old thinking-“from me by works”

(pursuit of earned right-ness)

B. New thinking-“from God by faith”

(imputation of right-ness)

IV. The Goal is to Truly Know Him (v.10)

A. To learn Him, not just things about Him

B. To learn to be empowered by Him

(the same power that brought Him back to life)

C. To be at peace with the results of identifying with Him

(unfair attacks/false accusations, etc. that He faced)

D. To increasing value obedience as He did

(revisit chapter 2, verses 5-11)

V. Conclusion

Discussion: What part of verse 10 is the most challenging to you and why?

Prayer/Challenge: May we strive to know Him more this week as v.10 describes.

Part 31 Philippians 2:19-30 “The Working Examples”

Intro: Story of “Singer 1911s”.

They were “working examples” (not prototypes) but real products.

In the first part of chapter 2, Paul presented the concepts of “having the same mind as Christ” and “working out our salvation”. Next, he gave two “working examples” with Timothy and Epaphroditus. Before we look at them individually, let’s review key parts of “working out our own salvation” (v.12).

– “work” is the picture of working a field, mine, or vineyard to its fullest potential (v.12)

– the process is God doing the work in/through us for His purposes

– the result is becoming “lights” or more accurately “stars/luminaries” (working examples giving guidance to others) – word only used 2x in scripture

Let’s take a look at the first example, Timothy:

READ: 2:19-24

I. Timothy-Paul’s Apprentice

(future pastor of the Ephesian church)

A. “Like-minded” – Paul said no one else (in Rome) was of his same mindset…except Timothy (v.20)

B. Sincere – His motives were genuinely rooted in concern

C. Sought “the things of Christ” (v.21)

(the others all pursued their own goals)

D. Proven – he demonstrated his commitment over time

E. Teachable – father/son relationship in the gospel

(an apprentice who listened/put into practice)

READ: 2:25-30

II. Epaphroditus-A Leader in the Fellowship

A. Brother – a kindred spirit with Paul (v.25)

B. Fellow worker – same type of “work ethic” (v.25)

(he was a spiritual self-starter)

C. Fellow soldier – a trusted “wing-man” in the battle (v.25)

(cohort in the spiritual conflict)

D. Messenger – bringing support/encouragement (v.25)

(not just the gift, but his presence/co-laboring)

E. Selfless – (v.30) He put others before himself

(an “others” type of love-Jesus type of love)

III. Receive them well (v.29)

A. Give thanks for them

(give thanks “in the Lord”)

B. Honor them

(hold them in high esteem-men who are humble)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: What practical take-aways do we find from these two examples?

Prayer/Challenge: May we be empowered to live as “working examples” this week.

Part 30 Philippians 2:14-18 “The Finishing”

Intro: Story of “The Finishing Mill”.

– Rough cut lumber coming in

– Sizing, planing, sanding

– Finished product

The life of faith as a follower of Christ involves the “finishing process”, called sanctification (being set-apart) through the maturing process (being more and more like Christ).

In verses 12-13, we discussed “the working” with 3 primary points:

– The requirement of obedience

– The involvement of empowering

– The results being based on His purposes

Paul gives us parts of the finishing process here, let’s take a look at the details:

READ: 2:14-18

I. Finishing Involves “Doing” (v.14)

A. “All” means all without compartmentalization

B. Without complaining (no grumbling or muttering)

C. Without disputing (arguing or being argumentative)

II. Finishing Involves “Becoming” (v.15)

NOTE: “that you may become” (v.14 setting up v.15)

A. Becoming blameless (not hypocritical and like the world)

B. Becoming harmless (not harming the “little ones”)

C. Becoming faultless (not open to true accusations)

D. Becoming “stars” (radiant luminaries)

(only 2x in scripture-here and Rev. 21:11)

(brilliant fixed light for guidance, beauty, reference)

III. Finishing Involves “Holding Fast” (v.16a)

A. Holding to the Word as the source of life

B. Holding to the Word as the definer of life

C.Holding to the Word as the measure of life

IV. Finishing Involves Sacrifice (v.16b-18)

A. Paul’s joy (v.17)

B. The Lord’s joy (Hebrews 12:2)

C. Our joy (building up to chapter 4)

V. Conclusion

Discussion: What are your thoughts on becoming a “star”?

Prayer/Challenge: May we be “in the process” this week of “becoming”.

Part 29 Philippians 2:12-13 “The Working”

Intro: With the gospel message, it is fundamental to understand that “works” are not what saves us. Paul even wrote: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works lest anyone should boast.” Eph. 2:8-9 NKJV

He then goes on in the next verse to present the concept of us being His “workmanship” (which we previously discussed as the picture of Him creating a unique poem with us).

Here in Philippians, Paul builds on the premise of Christ’s example with verses 12-13 and we get more clarification of this activity of “work”.

Let’s take a look at the details:

READ: 2:12-13

I. The Working Requires Our Obedience (v.12a)

NOTE: (therefore, if then…connected to verse 5)

A. Jesus’ model was obedience to the Father’s plan (v.5-8)

B. Paul is commending their obedient spirit

(they are usable-“coachable”)

C. The results are afterward, as Jesus was/is exalted

(the obedience comes first)

II. The Working Involves an Empowering (v.12b)

A. “Work” (energeo) here implies realizing a potential, working a field to maximize a harvest

B. The empowerment of relying on the Word

(we are to learn it and default to it as the standard)

C. The empowerment of applying

(eternal value productivity-maximizing harvest)

D. The empowerment of prayer

(guidance, wisdom, discernment)

III. The Working Results in His Purposes (v.13b)

A. The Holy Spirit changes us over time

(by the Word, prayer, circumstances, people, etc.)

B. The Holy Spirit works through us

(according to His time, method, priorities)

C. The process is the “poiema” (Eph. 2:10)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: What are some tough parts of the “changes” He makes in us? What are some of the benefits?

Prayer/Challenge: May we be empowered of God to “work out our salvation” this week.

Part 28 Philippians 2:1-11 “A Mind for Unity”

Intro: I remember in years past a common phrase “I’m of a mind to ________” or “He’s of a mind to _______”. In other words, it referenced a determination, inclination, or mindset. It could also be described as a predisposition toward an action or reaction. After Paul presented the passage about striving together, he pivots to describe the mindset that facilitates a unified outcome.

Let’s take a look at the details he mentions:

READ: 2:1-11

I. Remember the Premise of Humility (v.1)

(therefore, if then) Since…

A. There is encouragement in Christ

B. There is comfort in love

C. There is fellowship in the Spirit

D. There is affection and mercy in the togetherness

(since these are realities, incorporate them…realize them)

II. Remember to be Unified in the Approach (v.2)

NOTE: Unity IS NOT uniformity

A. “Same thinking” – patterns of thought

B. “Same love” – type of love-God’s love

C. “Same goals” – eternal type goals (higher, big picture)

III. Remember Christ as Our Model (v.3-8)

A. It is an “others” orientation (denying self)

(taking up the cross)

B. He didn’t leverage His deity to ease the challenges

(He faced it all directly and didn’t cheat)

C. He chose the role of a servant

D. He chose obedience (always) (I Samuel 15:22b-23a)

(even the cross…”Your will be done”)

IV. Remember that God Does the Exalting (v. 9-11)

A. Ultimately, God chooses who/what is to be elevated

B. Jesus is the name elevated above ALL

(past, present, future, physical, spiritual, etc.)

(ALL will know, submit, AND admit the truth)

V. Conclusion

Discussion: What are the tough parts of following Jesus’ model? What helps in the process?

Prayer/Challenge: May we aspire and be empowered of God to follow His model this week.

Part 27 Philippians 1:27-30 “Together”

Intro: A theme Paul often wrote about was unity in the churches. In his letter to the Philippians, he included a term numerous times meaning “together” as we would say “team”. In other words, he is teaching/reminding them to face the challenges as one family of faith.

Let’s take a look at the details he mentions:

READ: 1:27-30

I. Conduct Worthy of the Gospel (v.27a)

A. “Only” – “remember this one thing”

(a working “rule of thumb”)

B. “Worthy of the gospel”-honoring Christ/message of Him

(it’s about Him-Jesus centric, not believer centric)

C. It’s about the right aspirations – I Thess. 4:9-12

II. Commitment Together for the Gospel (v.27b)

A. “Stand fast”-military idea of standing ready (Eph. 6)

B. “One”-unified around a common truth

(we must teach what that is and isn’t)

C. “Striving together” literally “co-athletes” (team)

(2:5-8 will address that more specifically)

III. Confidence Produced by the Gospel (v.28-30)

A. Look beyond what you see

(not intimidated by adversaries)

B. Christ in us produces 2 things (2 Cor. 2:14-17)

(to the lost-a reminder of pending judgment)

(to the saved-a reminder of the gift of salvation)

C. Challenges are ultimately for the Lord’s glory/purposes

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: What are the challenges to the reactions produced by the gospel (Christ in us) in verse 28?

Prayer/Challenge: May we aspire and be empowered of God to live worthy of the gospel this week.

Part 26 Philippians 1:12-26 “The Gospel in Motion”

Intro: From the beginning, the “Good News” brought a variety of reactions and results. For example, some loved John the Baptizer, some thought he was crazy, others were offended, and some tried to eliminate him. When Jesus began preaching the “Good News” (perfectly I might add), the reaction was much the same.

For the early church, there would also be a wide variety of responses to the “Good News” (Gospel). It would include epic moments such as Acts 2, persecution of many kinds and everything in-between. For Paul, the journey would take many forms, but the gospel was always “in motion” with him. In other words, the speaking of the truth of Jesus would prompt reactions of all kinds. Let’s take a look at his description:

READ: 1:12-26

I. There was the Lord’s Masterful Workmanship (v.12)

A. There are many moving parts to His plan at all times

(Ephesians 2:10, 6:10)

B. There are various events that help line up “what’s next”

(“Furtherance”-Term for Greek Combat Engineering)

C. There are factors of time usually longer than we want

(Acts 21:15-28:31)

II. There were Unexpected Results (v.13-14)

A. The whole Praetorium was hearing the gospel message (Praetorian Guard-10,000 soldiers)

B. The brethren had become confident and emboldened

(“speak” means common conversation not preaching)

III. There were Uncontrollable Actions of Others (v.15)

A. There will be those sharing positive accounts

B. There will be those sharing negative accounts

C. Both will happen outside of our control

IV. There was the Win/Win Reality (v.19-26)

A. To live is more time to invest himself in Kingdom work

(fruit from His labor)

B. To die is to be with Jesus and realize/see the fruit

(“depart”-striking a tent and moving on, setting sail)

V. Conclusion

Discussion: Which one of the points is most encouraging?

Which one requires the most faith?

Prayer/Challenge: May we view this week as one where the gospel is “in motion” in our lives.

Part 25 Philippians 1:1-11 “The Fellowship of the Gospel”

Intro: In recent years, the word “fellowship” has become a term rarely used by newer generations. However, it is a foundational term among the family of God to describe “having in common” a bond in Christ and the gospel message. It can be a local “fellowship” or the “fellowship” we share with each other. Additionally, it’s something that can be strained or broken as well. Biblically speaking, it’s also important to remember that it’s a term reserved for those that truly share “the fellowship of the gospel”.

In Paul’s letter to the Philippian believers, he opens by describing his thoughts of them and his pattern of prayer for them. In the description, are insights for us to consider as helpful reminders for daily living. Let’s take a look:

READ: 1:1-11

I. Paul Prayed with Thankfulness (v.3,5)

A. He had an “attitude of prayer”-an on-going conversation

(not every moment, but as he thought of them-v.3)

B. They shared something real and eternal (v.5)

(in Christ and His message)

II. Paul Prayed with Confidence (v.6)

NOTE: He reminds us of the “big picture” (Eph. 5:9-10)

A. The work in us was began by the Lord

B. The work in us is good (according to the Lord)

C. The work in us will be completed by the Lord

D. The work in us is for the Lord’s purposes

III. Paul Prayed for Their Growth (v.9-11)

NOTE: The word love is “agape” not “phileo”

A. We are to be growing in knowledge of agape

(learning what it really is)

B. We are to be growing in discernment of agape

(learning what it really isn’t)

C. We are to be growing in understanding of excellence

(according to the Lord’s definitions)

D. We are to be growing in sincerity

(pure motives and dedication)

E. We are to be growing in the fruits of righteousness

(produce that brings praise to God through Jesus)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: How can v. 6 get misused or misapplied?

Prayer/Challenge: May we be growing in these areas this week.

Part 24 Ephesians 6:14-24 “Standing Strong-Part 2”   3-10-24

Intro: In Paul’s illustration, the tactical equipment and engagement are the last steps of a lengthy process of preparation.

It reminds me of a similar process (personal story).

So in this second part of “Standing Strong”, let’s do a quick review of part one and then take a look at the final portion of instructions he wrote:

READ: 6:14-24

Reminder/Review: “Stand” is the Goal (v.14)

I. The Essential Equipment to Stand

A. Truth (described as a tactical belt) (v.14a)

(the breastplate/sword are attached to it)

(it is the anchor points and kept tight/close)

B. Righteousness (described as a breastplate) (v.14b)

(practical “right-ness” in everyday life)

(it is the righteousness of Christ in us)

C. The Gospel of Peace (described as boots) (v.15)

(personally-we are at peace with God-Romans 5:1)

(to others-we share the hope of peace with God)

D. Faith (described as a shield) (v.16)

(personally-to stop/quench fiery darts meant for:

– fear/intimidation

– doubt/questioning

– hurt/wounding/weakening

– division/isolation

– deception/disorientation

– distraction/ineffectiveness

– discouragement/derailment

(w/others-shields interlocking both front and top)

E. Salvation (described as a helmet) (v.17a)

(mind fixed on sound doctrine/thought patterns)

F. Word (described as a sword of the Spirit) (v.17b)

(defensively-as Jesus did quoting Deut. 8:3)

(offensively-as Paul describes in 2 Cor. 10:3-6)

II. The Essential Activity for Engagement (v.18)

A. Praying always-a default posture of prayer

(before/during/after engagement)

B. Praying in the Spirit

(He is the guide/intercessor)

C. Praying for empowerment

(perseverance/sustainment)

(for boldness as Paul requested-v.19)

D. Praying for our fellow believers

(battling in the spiritual realms for others)

III. Conclusion

Discussion: What do you consider the most challenging of the equipment?

What parts have experienced the most success with?

Prayer/Challenge: May we be empowered to wear the equipment well this week.

Part 23 Ephesians 6:10-13 “Standing Strong-Part 1”     3-3-24

Intro: The idea of spiritual warfare produces several responses. It may cause some to fear, others to pretend is isn’t real, and some to get excited about going to war. In truth, Paul gives us solid teaching to understand the conflict and how we should approach it.

Let’s take a look at the text:

READ: 6:10-13

I. Our Strength is Specifically in the Lord (v.10)

A. “Finally” speaks of prior preparation (Ch.1-6a)

(process of sanctification already on-going)

B. “Be strong in the Lord” – (to receive, acquire strength)

(He as the on-going source)

C. “Power of His might” – (His vast ability, potential)

(He is unlimited in method and means to act)

II. The Conflict is All-encompassing (v.11)

A. “The whole armor” – it’s ALL needed

B. “Wiles” (methodiah) means the enemy strategizes

(2:2 – people are used in the schemes)

III. The Enemies are Spiritual (v.12)

A. Principalities – (headship, dominion)

(demons over nations – Daniel 10:2-15)

B. Powers – (under the authority of principalities)

(inter-personal level activities)

C. Rulers – (the world economic system)

(darkness means blindness)

D. Spiritual hosts – (spiritual activities/religions)

(all types of religion and spiritualism)

IV. The Goal is to Faithfully Stand (v.13)

A. Ultimately, our goal is to “stand”

(not be the aggressor)

B. The conflict will be on-going

(having done all day-to-day)

V. Conclusion

Discussion: Where do you see the biggest threats/challenges from the first section?

Prayer/Challenge: May we be aware/mindful of what’s truly happening “behind the scenes” this week.

Part 22 Ephesians 5:22-6:9 “Relationships of the Light” 2-25-24

Intro: Often times when looking at principles given in the New Testament, it’s helpful to see the foundational teachings and/or history behind it. Today, as we look at relationships, it’s beneficial to see what God designed in the beginning.

Genesis 2:24 is the directive of “a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and they shall become one flesh”.

It was right after Eve was created, meaning it was a purposeful design/institution in a perfect environment and not just a practical, random tradition.

With that in mind, let’s take a look art the text:

READ: 5:22-33

I. Marriage Relationships are to Reflect Light (v.22-33)

NOTE: Submission as a general principle (v.21)

A. Wives-submission general + submission positional

(+ respect (v. 33b – honor)

(it is not a statement on women/men in general)

B. Men-submission general + love (agapaō)

(Godly love in action)

(as Christ loves – 5:2)

(self-sacrifice, respect, humility)

(loving as himself-the oneness principle-v.31)

(nourishing – to seek a healthy environment)

(cherish – to value her highly)

READ: 6:1-4

II. Family Relationships are to Reflect Light (6:1-4)

A. We are to honor and obey (respect) our parents

(God’s commandment is still in force)

B. There is a promise of favor tied to it

(speaks of heart issues)

C. Fathers are not to provoke (as the spiritual head)

(do not be critical without praise-an imbalance)

(do not be inconsistent with discipline/favorites)

(do not simpy dismiss the child’s perspective)

D. Father’s are to teach and train-up children in the Lord

(principles of scripture-need to be a learner first)

(model of Christ-fruit of the Spirit)

(build an environment of safety/encouragement)

READ: 6:5-9

III. Work Relationships are to Reflect Light (6:5-9)

A. Workers (believers) are to have the right attitude

(respect, honesty, full effort “as to the Lord”)

(the boss may not be a believer)

B. Employers (bosses) are to have the right attitude

(respect, honesty, serving “as to the Lord”)

(avoiding favoritism – v. 9)

C. Both are under the authority of the Lord-Master (v.9)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: How do these intructions go against our flesh and/or modern culture?

Prayer/Challenge: May we work this week to honor God in our relationships.

Part 21 Ephesians 5:15-21 “Value of the Light” 2-18-24

Intro: Story of redeeming a gift card (w/certain instructions).

Today, we’ll be looking at how Paul defined “redeeming the time” and what implications that has for us.

Let’s take a look:

READ: 5:15-21

I. We are to Choose Wisdom not Foolishness (v.15, 17)

NOTE: “circumspect” or “careful”, meaning precise

READ: verses 5:9-10

A. Enlightenment for knowledge (discernment)

READ: Romans 12:1-2

B. Enlightenment for wisdom (application)

(Reminder: Eph. 2:10 “poiema”)

II. We are to Redeem the Time (v.16)

A. The time before us, current and after us is evil

(we are born and “born again” in a fallen world)

B. We will not be able to make the days not evil

(I can’t “fix” it, and need to release that illusion)

(I am to be light in it…and let God do what He wills)

C. As believers, we are now made for timelessness

(but are gifted time here to redeem for His purposes)

III. We are to Live Joyfully in the Spirit (v.18-19)

A. There should be a melody in our heart to the Lord (v.19)

B. The melody inside should be expressed to others

(Reminder: 2:10 “poiemaAND 5:2 “fragrance”)

IV. We are to Live Gratefully in the Spirit (v.20)

A. The orientation of our thanks is to be toward God

B. The nature of our thanks is about evrything

(he wrote “always” and “all things”)

V. We are to Live Submitted in the Spirit (v.21)

A. We must choose submission over competition

(love one another as ourself)

B. We must remember that it’s “to the Lord”

(an antidote to pride)

VI. Conclusion

Discussion: What are the challenges to the specific point of “redeeming the time”?

Prayer/Challenge: May we redeem our time well this week.

Part 20 Ephesians 5:8-14 “Light of the Walk” 2-11-24

Intro: Historically, the premise of light versus dark illustrates the contrast between good and evil. It’s always been interesting to me, that most will go along with the illustration (or metaphor) but less will accept the actual definitions that scripture reveal. It is in this cultural reality that we live.

Today, we’ll be looking at how Paul framed it for the Ephesians and how it applies to us.

Let’s take a look:

READ: 5:8-14

I. We are Light (v.8a)

NOTE: “in the Lord”

A. We were once darkness (not just in darkness)

(lostness is darkness, not just in darkness)

B. We are now light (not just in the light)

(“in the Lord”, a fundamentally different reality)

(we are “the light of the world´- Matt. 5:14)

II. We are the Walk in the Light (v.8b)

NOTE: “as children of light”

A. Born again (with a new spiritual DNA connection)

B. We are to remember our position as dependents

(not thinking we’ve reached parity with our Father)

III. We are to Produce by the Light (v.9-10)

NOTE: applying ourselves to find out” (v.10)

A. Goodness – “a good nature, Godly disposition”

(a default that is good)

B. Righteousness – “right actions, right motives”

C. Truth – “foundation built on absolutes”

(essentials that are true whether believed or not)

IV. We are to Remain in the Light (v.11-12)

A. There are to be healthy lifestyle boundaries “works”

(no commonality or communion with darkness)

B. We are to bring clarity (exposure)

(even avoiding discussing such things if possible)

V. We are to Trust the Light (v.13-14)

A. Be ready for the results of “shedding light on the subject”

(example of Jesus – “men loved darkness”)

(there will be discomfort for some)

B. Follow the Lord’s lead in the carrying of the light

(His light…”in the Lord”)

VI. Conclusion

Discussion: What are you learning about the moments when your light comes in contact with (or exposes) darkness?

Challenge: May we carry the light well this week.

Part 19 Ephesians 5:1-7 “Conduct of the Walk” 2-4-24

Intro: Personal story of an old anti-smoking campaign commercial on T.V. where a little boy tries to do everything just like his dad.

In the next section, Paul uses the idea of “growing up to be just like Jesus” as a premise to address our conduct as “adults” in the faith. He begins to develop the picture of how spiritual “grown-ups” are to behave and the “why” behind it.

Let’s take a look:

READ: 5:1-7

I. Our Conduct is to Mimic Jesus (v.1)

Note: image of father/son, mother/daughter, rabbi/disciple

A. The “therefore” is the hinge

(the premise applies backward/forward in the text)

B. The self-view as a child reminds us of our position

(dependent but dearly loved)

II. Our Conduct is to be Sacrificial Like Christ (v.2)

A. Love is to be present in everything we do

(it should motivate and restrain)

B. Our passing through should leave a pleasing aroma

(offering/sacrifice-complete image of O.T. rituals)

III. Our Conduct is not to be Self-centered (v.3-4a)

A. The mindset/pursuits mentioned are focused on self

(pleasure, greed, getting a laugh, mocking others)

B. We are “saints” which means we are “set-apart”

C. There shouldn’t even be valid reasons for accusations

(not event the appearance of it)

IV. Our Conduct is to be a Contrast (v.4b)

A. Gratitude is to be our “baseline”

(not thinking of self first)

B. Offering thanks can sometimes be sacrificial

(especially when other reactions seem justified)

V. Our Conduct is to Foreshadow Heaven (v.5-7)

A. Those uninterested in Christlikeness will not be there

(there is no “worldly” section of heaven)

B. We must resist the lies of empty words

(the idea of worldliness/righteous sharing space)

VI. Conclusion

Discussion: What are your thoughts regarding Paul’s mention of thanks as a contrast to the list of unrighteous actions (v.4)

Challenge: May we continue to mature as spiritual “grown-ups” this week.

Part 18 Ephesians 4:25-32 “Patterns of the Walk” 1-28-24

Intro: Personal story of building model cars; trying to piece together, paint, etc. just like the picture.

In our walk of faith, there are patterns for the “new man” to follow that are “as Christ” modeled. Whether it is the way He took the mindset of serving others, the way He spoke, or the way He responded, the pattern for us is Jesus.

In this next section, Paul connects old and new to illustrate timeless truth that is applicable in our time as much as any other.

Let’s take a look:

READ: 4:25-32

I. The Pattern of Speaking Truth (v.25)

NOTE: Echoes Eph. 4:15 & quote is Zechariah 8:16

A. The mention of lying first has to do with motive

(A goal of deceit or misdirection-not honest mistake)

B. The quote illustrates a lifestyle of speaking the truth

(And building synergy of truth in the fellowship)

II. The Pattern of Thinking Right (v.26-27)

READ: Psalm 4

A. The Psalm sets up a contrast of thought patterns

(“Sons of men” (the elites) vs. the “set apart”)

B. The “Sons of men” love worthlessness and pursue lies

C. The “set apart” meditate on the things of the Lord

D. The “set apart” offer sacrifices of righteousness

E. The “set apart” choose trust and receive joy/peace

III. The Pattern of Being Productive (v.28)

NOTE: Echoes 2 Thess. 3:10

A. We are to work with purpose and integrity

B. We are to have the goal of sharing as well

IV. The Pattern of Encouraging Others (v.29)

NOTE: Out of the heart one speaks-Matt. 12:34-35

A. Our words are to be life-giving not corrupting (rotting)

(edifying-building up)

B. Our words are to be gracious

(They may not deserve it, but w/ season/restraint)

V. The Pattern of Being Kind (v.30-32)

A. The Holy Spirit’s nature is “the fruit”

(Activity contrary to the fruit is grievous to Him)

B. “Putting away” involves decisions and effort

(He provides a list of “unacceptables”)

C. Jesus was gracious/forgiving to us-we’re to reflect that

VI. Conclusion

Discussion: Which one of the patterns is the hardest and why?

Challenge: May we continue to look to Jesus as our pattern this week.

Part 17 Ephesians 4:17-24 “Processes of the Walk” 1-21-24

Intro: Personal story of learning the process of fire-making, the planning, gathering, preparation, placement, monitoring, and maintenance.

In our walk of faith, there are processes to be aware that require active participation on our part. Paul presses into these and starts to provide specifics for us to understand the “moving parts” and the reality of what’s happening around us.

Let’s take a look:

READ: 4:17-24

I. The Process of Recognizing “the World” (v.17-19)

A. Their thought patterns are “futile” (foolish and useless)

(see it for what it is, not “equal but different”)

B. Their understanding is limited (darkened) (v.18)

(things are there in the dark, you just can’t see them)

C. Their blindness creates separation from God/His ways

(there is a distance from the source of truth)

D. Their flesh is in the “driver’s seat”

(steering, accelerating, stopping, etc.)

II. The Process of Rejecting “the World” (v.22)

A. We are to reject the fleshly “man”

(not appease it or try peaceful alliance/co-existence)

B. We are to avoid the “rotten results” (corrupt) of the flesh

(the natural consequences of that pattern of thinking)

III. The Process of Renewing the Mind (v.20-21, 23-24)

Note: Echoes Romans 12:1-2

A. Remember, the truth is found specifically in Jesus

(what we know to be true, like 1 John’s “to know”)

B. Remember, the battle starts in our minds

(thinking-emotions-decisions-consequences)

C. Remember, the new man was created according to God

(old man according to the flesh)

D. Remember, the righteousness/holiness is from God

(His workmanship, “Poiema” (poem)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: What parts of the processes are the most challenging?

How have you seen parts work effectively?

Challenge: May we continue to learn and be mindful of the processes at work this week.

Part 16 Ephesians 4:7-16 “Synergy of the Walk”  1-14-24

Intro: Among all of God’s amazing creation, there are some animals with a long history of working-relationships with humans, such as horses, donkeys, oxen harness dogs, etc. “Draft” horses have always intrigued me with their size and power such as Clydesdales. Along with the potential of what horse can do, there is a mathematical advantage to having two because of “synergy”. For example, if one horse can pull 2,000 pounds, two can pull 6,000 (3×1 instead of 2×1).

In the Kingdom of God, the principle of synergy is built into the teachings and instructions for working together. Our individual giftings, callings and skillsets are given to be used synergistically. As Paul continues to define “the walk”, he now addresses the synergy of the walk. Let’s take a look:

READ: 4:7-16

I. The Giftings are Given According to Grace (v.7-8)

A. Giftings in grace “according to” not “out of”

(similar to what we learned back in 3:16)

(gifts are just that…gifts not earned abilities)

B. It was always His plan to give gifts to “the Body”

(to fully utilize all who are willing)

II. The Giftings are Given in His Authority (v.8-10)

A. He methodically did all that was required

(descending, ascending, etc.)

B. He earned the authority by His own standard

(Matthew 28:18, Revelation 1:18)

III. The Giftings are Given for His Purposes (v.11-14)

A. Roles vary but are to be for the same ultimate purposes

(Rom./Cor. – emphasis on “same Spirt”, “one body”)

B. Process should result in:

(people able to stand firm on solid, settled doctrine)

(people able to recognize/discern trickery and deceit)

IV. The Giftings are Given for a Healthy Body (v.15-16)

A. Speaking truth IN love (v.15)

(“truth without love is brutality, but love without truth is hypocrisy” – Anonymous, mentioned by Warren Wiersbe)

B. Everyone is to do their part (v.16)

(accountability, encouragement, teaching)

C. The end result is Kingdom synergy (v.16)

(whole body working together)

V. Conclusion

Discussion: What are some ways we see a diversity of gifts?

What are some ways we see synergy? (3×1 instead of 2×1)?

What can hinder either or both of these?

Challenge: May we seek to do our part this week.

Part 15 Ephesians 4:1-6 “Defining the Walk”  1-7-24

Intro: Words have meanings, and I’m realizing that commonly used words often have different meanings to different people. Even in Christian circles, words don’t always have the same meanings to everyone. Today, we’re beginning to explore the word “walk”, as in our “Christian walk”. In chapter 4, Paul transitions from the “sacred mytery” to defining “the walk” and charging the reader to pursue it daily. Let’s take a look:

READ: 4:1-6

I. The Call of Unity (v.1)

Note: Facilitated by grace (2:8-10)

A. “Beseech” is a strong exhortation

(remember…focus…consider)

B. We are made worthy, not earning worthiness

READ: 2:8-10

C. Unity among believers is a “good work” (2:10)

II. The Attitude of Unity (v.2-3)

Note: “Unity is not uniformity.” – W.W.

A. The posture is proactive, not passive

(it involves the will)

B. It’s choosing humility, meekness and patience in love

(lowliness, gentleness, long-sufferring)

C. It’s strongly pursuing peace (endeavoring)

(in the Spirit is the key – v.3)

(“the peace of God” is the standard – Col. 3:15)

(it likely will involve some give-and-take)

III. The Foundations of Unity (v.4-6)

Note: The bedrock truths found when you dig down

A. Unity is based on doctrinal truth, not emotion

(previous chapters 1-3 build out the reasons)

B. There is a “settled” body of doctrine to unite us

(major points of the gospel and the church)

C. We are to teach and guard them in love

(“speaking truth in love” v.15)

(remember-“In the essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity”)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: What are some sources of disunity among the church today? How do we approach them?

Challenge: May we endeavor to walk in unity this week.

Part 14 Ephesians 3:14-21 “Experiencing the Mystery”

12-31-23

Intro: This time of year, we look back and consider various things that happened over the last 12 months. It often seems as if we were just here a moment ago considering the same things, but hindsight can produce clarity after experiences. After Paul explained “the mystery”, he also worte about his prayer for the readers to comprehend it. In looking at his prayer, we also get insight for ourselves and our faith journey. Let’s take a look what he prayed:

READ: 3:14-21

I. The Premise of the Prayer (v.14-16a)

A. He took a purposeful posture…kneeling (v.14)

(he specifically took time, it was important to him)

B. He asked for provision according to God’s ability (v.16a)

(proportionally not “a portion” – W.W.)

II. The Presence as Part of the Mystery (v.16b-17)

A. For an inner strengthening (v.16b)

(the timbers of the soul made strong)

B. That Christ may dwell (v.17a)

(literally that He may be “at home”)

C. That roots may grow (v.17b)

(like natural grasses that grow very deep roots)

(able to withstand the drought, cold, snow, etc.)

(sourced in the love of Christ)

III. The Process as Part of the Mystery (v.18-19)

A. To comprehend the scope of His working (v.18)

(width, length, depth, height…spatial)

B. To know the scale of His love (v.19)

(filled with “the fullness of God”…a genuine love)

IV. The Purpose of the Prayer (v.20-21)

A. To highlight His ability and power in us

B. To bring glory to Him now and forever

(the ripple effect across generations)

V. Conclusion

Discussion: How does the realization of the “scope of His working” make a difference? (width, length, depth, height)

Challenge: May we comprehend the mystery and live accordingly this week.

Part 13 Ephesians 3:1-13 “The Sacred Mystery”        12-17-23

Intro: There is a popular history curriculum used in homeschool and private school called “The Mystery of History”. It wonderfully aligns the Bible to see history through a Biblical lens.

Today, we’re going to dig into what Paul calls a mystery “hidden in God” but revealed in and by Jesus. It is an amazing truth and one misunderstood by people then AND now.

Let’s take a look what he wrote:

READ: 3:1-13

I. The Mystery Hidden

A. It was hidden in God “from the beginning” (v.9)

(from everyone…prophets, Patriarchs etc.)

B. The Holy Spirit operated in a deliberately measured way

(not yet revealing such things to men-v.5)

C. The Jews stewarded a message they didn’t understand

II. The Mystery Revealed

A. Revealed by the Holy Spirit to Apostles and Prophets

(Jewish context, some received it, others rejected it)

B. Revealed to Paul as a “steward” to the Gentiles (v.3-6)

C. Revealed to show the eternal purposes of God (v.11)

(the gospel is the key to unlock the mysteries of O.T.)

(without it, one is limited to understand the O.T.)

III. The Mystery Experienced

A. There is now a unity of fellowship with God/each other

(not a parallel with the Jews then or now-v.6)

(those still following the Law didn’t move forward)

B. Given as a gift of grace to us (v.7)

C. Given in incredible power through the Holy Spirit

(“energia” and “dunamis”)

IV. The Mystery Proclaimed

A. We are the living proclamation of His wisdom (v.10)

B. We are the “artifacts” to both spirit world & humanity

C. We have access, boldness and confidence (v.10)

(through faith in Him)

D. We are engaged in the struggle every day

V. Conclusion

Discussion: What difference does it make in daily activity to understand the principle of the “mystery”?

Challenge: May we live the mystery our each day for others to see the truth.

Part 12 Ephesians 2:11-22 “Hope and Peace”    12-10-23

Intro: Hope and peace are common themes around Christmas, but the definitions vary depending on the person, circumstance, background etc. For example, here’s a recent quote from a Ukrainian soldier, “I will not feel the triumph from the victory because of the price we paid for it,” WSJ 12/10/23

For him, it will be the end of hostilities/suffering and the return to other pursuits, but true hope and peace are different.

Let’s take a look what he wrote:

READ: 2:11-22

Another pivotal “therefore” – Paul writes a reminder about the reality of Christ’s work/gifts (v.8-10)

I. The Status of People when Christ Came (v.11-13)

A. There were those distant from God (v.12)

(having no hope)

B. There were those near to God (v.12)

(people of the covenants of promise)

II. The Status of Relationships when Christ Came (v.14)

A. Wall of separation between Jew and Gentile (v.14)

(walled court of the gentiles in the temple courtyard)

B. Wall of separation between God and humanity (v.18)

III. The Result of Peace when Christ Came (v.14)

A. Jesus Himself is our peace (The Prince of Peace) (v.14)

(apart from Him there is no true, real peace)

B. There is peace with God (v.15) & (Romans 5:1)

(enmity…absolutely no hope of fulfilling the Law)

C. There is peace between Jew and Gentile (v.15)

(everyone in the faith)

(not replacing Jews, something new-the Church)

D. There was reconciliation of humanity to God (v.16)

(both Gentiles AND Jews needed it)

IV. The Building Started when Christ Came (v.19-22)

A. Christ as the Chief Cornerstone (v.20)

(perfectly setting the standard, angles, etc.)

B. Apostles/prophets are the foundational teachings

(the reason we are “people of the Book”)

C. We are fit together as the dwelling place of God (v.22)

(the Holy Spirit in us is to be Light to the world)

(QUOTE…When the Church is least like the world, it does the most for the world”. – W.W.)

V. Conclusion

Discussion: How does it make a difference in the world around us to be the dwelling place of God in the Spirit (v.22)? (think about the quote)

Challenge: May we seek to be a presence of hope and peace this week by the power of the Holy Spirit in us.

______________________________

Part 11 Ephesians 2:1-10 “Alive in Christ”

Intro: When it comes to understanding what it means to be “in Christ” and living a life of “good works”, Paul presents a clear description of the contrast between “living” and “dead”. It’s an important reminder for us as we approach each day as those alive in a world that isn’t. Let’s take a look what he wrote:

READ: 2:1-10

I. Without Christ We are Spiritually Dead (v.1-3)

A. Without Christ there is no option for life (v.1)

(rehab is not possible, only new birth)

B. Without Christ there is alignment with the world (v.2-3)

(according to the course of this world)

C. Without Christ there is a value system/leader (v.2)

(the enemy’s “methodiah” all around 6:11)

But God” – The pivot point (v.4)

II. The Provision of Christ is Life (v.4-9)

A. Love was/is the motive of God (v.4)

B. His salvation is purley based on grace (v.5, 8-9)

(nothing to be prideful about)

C. He places us with Christ in heavenly places

III. Walking in Christ Involves Good Works (v.10)

A. He is the One doing the work

B. “Good works” are according to His definition

C. “Good works” are to be more than a by-product

(we are to proactively be looking)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion:

What are some similarities between the world’s idea of “good works” versus God’s definition?

What are some contrasts between the world’s idea of “good works” and God’s definition?

Challenge: May we seek to lean into more good works this week according to the Holy Spirit’s lead.

Part 10 Ephesians 1:15-23 “Knowledge and Wisdom”        11-26-23

Intro: Personal story of a builder with great knowledge AND the experience to apply it.

Paul gives the Ephesians (and us) much to consider AND apply. Let’s take a look:

READ: 1:15-23

I. What Paul Valued in Them (v.15)

A. “Faith in the Lord Jesus”

B. “Love for all the saints

C. No specific mention of what they had done

II. What Paul Prayed for Them (v.17)

A. For the Spirit to enlighten their understanding (hearts)

B. For the Spirit to give wisdom to apply the understanding

III. What Revelations We are to Know (v.18-19)

A. The view forwardthe hope of His calling

(perpetual hope…enemy WANTS/NEEDS to steal)

B. The view of ourselvesthe glory of His inheritance in us

(we are a valuable, spiritual asset “bought at a price”)

(I Cor. 6:20)

C. The view of the worldthe exceeding greatness of His power toward us”

In reality, He/His Kingdom is far above:

  • The rulers themselves
  • The authority given them
  • The power they wield
  • The territory they control
  • The prestige of titles worn

         (all under Jesus’ feet…not co-ruling)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: The application

The view forward – ours is a hope-filled trust

(What difference does hope really make?)

The view of ourselves – we are genuinely, truly valued

(What difference does feeling valued really make?)

The view of the world – the world is already defeated

(What difference does it make?)

(like trying to board the Titanic after the leak started)

Challenge: May we continue to know Him more and more.

A. We have a sure inheritance (v.11)

B. We are sealed by the power of the Holy Spirit (v.13)

C. We have the Holy Spirit’s guarantee for the future (v.14)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion: What are some of the treasures we most often overlook or forget?

Challenge: May we embrace all of the truths of the richness in Christ and live a full life reflecting it.

Part 8 Galatians 6:11-18 “Final Comments”        11-12-23

Intro: As Paul takes over the pen to finish the letter, he emphasizes a few points as parting reminders for them to live in the high-priced freedom they’ve been given and stand firm against those attempting to steal it.

READ: 6:11-18

I. Beware of underlying Motives (v.12)

A. Don’t give in to the culture police

(Jewish leaders attempted to bully the early church)

(there are current attempts to bully us into conformity)

B. Judaizers used strong sales pitches in their appeals

(perhaps using logical, practical rationale)

C. Judaizers’ wanted to avoid association with the cross

(and the negative consequences that went with it)

II. Beware of the Dangers of Pride (v.12-13)

A. There is the compelling of others for one’s own purpose

A. Paul specifically modeled it throughout (2 Cor. 2:1-5)

B. It is a stumbling block to the Jews (1 Cor. 1:22-25)

(a difficulty for those of a legalist mindset)

C. It is foolishness to the Greeks (1 Cor. 1:23)

(a difficulty for those of a “sophisticated” mindset)

D. It is the power AND wisdom of God

(and will be a divisive subject)

IV. We are to Live as a New Creation (v.15)

A. Exterior things/cultural acceptance mean nothing

(true then and now as well)

B. We are to be crucified to the world (v.15 & 2:20)

C. There is liberty for the believer and the fellowship

(all the fruits of the Spirit)

V. Conclusion

Discussion: In what areas/subjects are we facing a conformity crisis now?

Challenge: As we pray, may we ask for boldness to stand in the truth and tenaciously hold on to the cross.

Part 7 Galatians 6:6-10 “The Law of the Harvest”  11-5-23

Intro: The Lord often referenced natural processes to illustrate spiritual truths. Paul used the same method with the “Law of the Harvest” to teach about choices, consequences, and the kingdom. Let’s take a look at what he wrote:

READ: 6:6-10

I. Be Mindful in the Preparation for Planting (v.7)

A. Choose the location wisely (Jesus’ parable of the soils)

B. Choose the timing wisely (seasons change)

C. Choose the method wisely (set up the seed for success)

(story: My Granddad planting corn deeper than most)

II. Be Deliberate in what is Being Planted (v.7-8)

A. We must be proactive in what seeds are planted

(worldly/fleshly seeds are everywhere – like weeds)

B. We must be willing to articulate the difference

(placing/stating different values)

III. Be Patient in the Waiting for the Harvest (v.9)

A. Fatigue will come to those working for good a harvest

(not if, but when)

B. Worry will come to those working for good

(because we have a vested interest)

C. We must leave the results to Him

(praying/depending on the Spirit to empower us)

IV. Be Gracious in Planting and Harvesting (v.10)

A. We are to be looking for opportunities

B. We are to be open to who that might be

C. We are to be especially aware of the fellowship

V. Conclusion

Discussion: Which one of the four points are the hardest?

Which one is the most overlooked?

Challenge: As we pray, may we ask for clarity/leading/patience/provision from the Lord for harvests that honor Him and benefit the kingdom.

Part 6 Galatians 6:1-5 “The Burdens of Life”    10-29-23

Intro: The story of the Comstock Silver Mine with the “square set” and the benefits of a “shared load”.

Now, let’s look at how Paul describes sharing burdens in the Christian life:

READ: 6:1-5

I. The Work of Restoration (v.1)

(a sudden fall, not a habitual lifestyle)

(picture of restoring a broken bone-setting/healing)

A. It is a Spirit-led process

(His time, His purpose, His method)

B. It is to be done in humility

(being aware of the dangers of pride)

II. The Work of Sharing a Burden (v.2)

(picture of a heavy load)

A. It’s an active eye to see their struggle

(someone straining to carry too much at one time)

B. It’s a tangible expression of the Law of Christ (5:14)

(loving others like ourselves)

III. The Importance of Remembrance (v.3)

A. We must be mindful of the true reality of salvation

(all of us are recipients of grace)

B. We must be mindful of incremental self-deception

(the flesh is weak and inclined to comparisons)

IV. The Discipline of Examination (v.4)

A. It’s an objective look at oneself before the Lord

B. It’s attending to one’s own walk and not others’

V. The Work of Bearing Our Own Load (v.5)

(lighter load like a soldier’s pack)

A. It’s accountability for the individual believer

B. It’s strength for the fellowship/kingdom

VI. Conclusion

Discussion: Which one of the five points are the hardest and why?

Challenge: As we pray, may we ask for the empowering to help share the load and fulfill the “Law of Christ”.

Part 5 Galatians 5:16-26 “Flesh versus Spirit” 10-22-23

Intro: When Jesus gave the call, “Follow Me”, it represented a cognitive decision and not just an emotional feeling. In other words, there was a moment of consideration of two different paths forward. In Galatians 5, Paul presents the contrast between the “lust of the flesh” and the “fruit of the Spirit” as cognitive choices.

He bridges into the section with the command to “Walk in the Spirit”. Let’s take a look at the details:

READ: 5:16-26

I. The Works of the Flesh are Dead (19-21)

A. The desires of the flesh are mechanical, instinctive

(Paul’s description in Romans 7)

B. The results are spiritually dead, spreading more death

(no Godliness found in the list…at all)

C. The natural disposition of the flesh is to accept the lie

(that certain pursuits/activities produce fulfilment)

II. The Fruit of the Spirit is Living (v.22-23)

A. The Holy Spirit produces life in/through us

(the list reflects His nature/character)

B. The result is a quiet process with nourishing effects

(for both us and those around us)

C. Fruit is made for consumption, not display

III. We are to Reckon Ourselves Dead to the Flesh

READ: Romans 6:4

A. We are to stop and consider the end-results

B. We must remember that appeasement doesn’t work

(the flesh cannot be “satisfied”)

C. “Crucifixion” is a daily choice not a one-time decision

IV. We are to Submit to the Holy Spirit (v.18)

A. Being led is submitting to following His direction

(as Jesus led His disciples, His choice of destination)

B. “Walking” in the Spirit is keeping pace with Him

(as Jesus led His disciples, start, stop, speed, etc.)

C. He empowers us “as we go”

(in real time)

V. Conclusion

Discussion:

What is more challenging…

Reckoning ourselves dead to the flesh or seeing the fruit growing in our lives?

What are some practical steps?

Challenge: As we pray, may we be empowered to reckon ourselves dead to sin and submit to the Holy Spirit’s process of producing fruit in/through us.

Part 4 Galatians 5:1-15 “Liberty in Christ”    10-15-23

Intro: There is a phrase (a “maxim” if you will) from generations ago that reflects the first part of Galatians 5. It goes like this, “In the essentials unity, in the non-essentials liberty, in all things charity (love)”. The “essentials” were points of truth Paul contended for daily. They are the foundation stones of the Christian life, and liberty is one of those stones.

Today, we’re looking at the gracious gift of liberty we have in Christ, and how we should view it. Let’s begin by reading the text:

READ: 5:1-15

I. We Are to Stand Fast in the Truth (v.1,7 & 4:16)

A. Salvation is 100% gift and 0% works

(Ephesians 2:8-10)

B. It’s based on a personal relationship with Christ

(other approaches are estrangement – v.4)

(Law, church membership, Sabbath, baptism etc.)

C. There is no spiritual profit in “Jesus + ____” (v.2,6)

(no “special” believers or experiences)

II. We Are to be Good Stewards of Liberty

A. We must remember what it’s based on

(solely on the work of Christ)

B. We must be aware of/resist corrupting heresies (v.9)

(leaven historically viewed as sin)

C. We must be disciplined as we live in it (v.13)

(boundaries AND teachings to others)

III. We Are to Express Liberty in Love (v.6,13-14)

A. Understanding grace should compel us to show grace

(v.14 – Jesus commanded the same)

B. It is also a wise, practical approach (v.15)

(neutralizes problems before they can grow)

C. It expresses our relational fidelity to Christ (v.4)

(our relationship with Christ being modeled to others)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion:

At what points can our liberty in Christ bring challenges?

Challenge: As we pray, may we thrive in our liberty in Christ, while continuing to grow in understanding of it.

The Power Block        10-1-23

Part 3 Galatians 3:19-4:20 “The Life of Faith”

Intro: For generations, the Law of Moses framed the understanding of living a God-honoring life in daily activities and sacred ceremonies. At the onset of the church, many believers wrestled with reconciling the Law with faith.

It was a conversation Paul probably had many times and he gives us a short version in chapter 3.

READ: 3:19-29

He speaks of the life of faith as a progression through stages starting with Abraham and ending with adoption of all who are in Christ. With that in mind, let’s consider the stages in 3 parts starting in chapter 4.

READ: 4:1-7

I. The Life of Faith was Established in the Law

A. It was formalized as more than a birth ancestry

(it was an all-encompassing way/view of life)

B. Boundaries/rules were set-up as a tutor (3:24)

(to establish a basic understanding of righteousness)

C. Many of the boundaries are still applicable now

(the moral rules all still apply-lying, stealing, etc.)

(in a similar way, some kindergarten rules still apply)

II. The Life of Faith was Empowered in Christ

(the heir fully grown)

A. The life of faith is personal – “Abba Father” (v.6)

(Spirit in us, temple veil torn)

B. The life of faith is open to all (3:28)

(revolutionary in the 1st century)

C. The life of faith is one of independence (v.7)

(there is risk like an adult child leaving home)

III. The Life of Faith is to be Exercised

READ: 4:8-20

A. Instead of rules, there is to be maturity

(learning to handle the freedom)

READ: Hebrews 5:12-14

B. There is to be confidence in the truth (4:16)

(not insecurity and retaliation)

C. There is to be a willingness to grow (Heb. 4:12-14)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion:

  1. What are the “comforts” of “spiritual childhood”?
  2. What are the challenges of “spiritual maturity”?

Challenge: As we pray, may we be empowered to grow in understanding and practice.

Part 2 Galatians 1:11-3:9 “Authentic Marks of the Gospel”

Intro: Last week we got started with considering Paul’s description of the gospel of grace. This week we’re moving into the context of the letter and how his instructions apply to us now.

STORY: Galatians 1:11-24

(Paul’s call to ministry and training)

Next in chapter 2, he describes going up to Jerusalem and the events there which we will come back to in a moment. To begin, let’s take a look at the first part of chapter 3:

READ: 3:1-9

I. The Ancestry of the Gospel has Always Been Faith

A. From Abraham to now, we are justified by faith (v.5-6)

B. The legacy of faith was always bigger than lineage (v.7)

(John 8:53-59)

C. Redemption was always to be for the whole world (v.8)

II. Communicating the Gospel is Articulating Faith

READ: 2:2-3

A. By our spoken words both publicly and privately

(Both settings should be the same message)

B. By our commitment to the truth (READ: 2:4-5)

(Paul was unyielding on the foundational truths)

C. By our conduct among others

(different groups should see the same person)

(beliefs affecting actions)

III. Living out the Gospel is by Faith (2:20)

READ: 2:19-21

A. It’s lived by faith in identifying with Christ’s death

(dead to the law and freed from it)

B. It’s lived by faith through His presence in us (Holy Spirit)

(He provides the life in us-freedom not bondage)

C. It’s lived by faith in trust of a loving Savior (v.20b)

(His burden is light – READ: Mat. 11:28-30)

IV. Conclusion

Discussion:

A. What are the hard parts about separating faith and works?

B. What are the challenges to being consistent?

C. How do we overcome those challenges?

Challenge: As we pray, may we be empowered to live a life consistent with a foundation built on faith.

The Power Block        9-17-23

Part 1 Galatians 1:1-10 “The True Gospel”

Intro:

– The concept of “The Power Block” study

– The people and region of Galatia

– Their founding by Paul

– Their primary problem

Let’s get started:

READ: Galatians 1:1-10

I. We are Delivered in Grace (v.4)

A. We are powerless to alter the reality of sin

(need for rescue, not just help/partnership)

B. We live in a culture of evil (evil age)

(this is not our home)

C. We are recipients of God’s grace

II. There is Only One True Gospel (v.6-9)

(According to the scriptures)

A. The origin of sin (Genesis 3, and Romans 5)

(the difference between inherited sin and sins)

B. The result of sin is death (Romans 6:23)

C. The payment for sin (Romans 5:8)

D. The redemption from sin (Romans 10:9-10)

III. There are Those Offering a Different Gospel (v.6-9)

A. Some want to add to the true gospel

(personal works, church membership, etc.)

B. Some want to subtract from the true gospel

(ignoring the subjects of sin, hell, transformation)

C. The rebuke for those perverting the gospel is strong

(may they be accursed, destroyed v.8-9)

IV. We are to Please God and Not People

A. Our first allegiance is to Jesus and His Word

(speaking truth in love was and is His model)

B. A more “palatable” gospel is no gospel at all

(the gospel can’t be altered to fit preferences)

V. Conclusion

Discussion: What kinds of different attitudes do you see toward the gospel now?

Challenge: As we pray, may you be secure in your relationship with Christ and confident in communicating a true gospel narrative in love.
