What made Mary so special? Was it her appearance or sense of humor? Maybe she had amazing domestic skills and strong parental instincts? While we don’t know much about her daily habits and skillset, we do know a key ingredient in her character. It’s a component that’s on display when she responds to the angel’s announcements regarding her and Elizabeth. She says this:
“Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” – Luke 1:38 NKJV
The key ingredient is “trust”. She trusted God. That may sound obvious and simple, but consider the context. She’s going along in life, making plans to set up housekeeping as any young Jewish girl would have been doing while engaged, and a strange person tells her she’s going to get pregnant before marriage. Unlike today, that was a socially terminal black-mark that nobody wanted. But she said, “Let it be to me according to your word.”
God knew her heart. Mary most likely had a beautiful spirit about her, and it came from a heart rich in trust for her Lord. The mother of our Savior trusted the One she would soon hold and care for; that’s why He chose her. Do you trust Him today? Do you trust Him “…according to His word”?
