Tiny

Big results in God’s kingdom often start very small. Jesus explained it this way:

“To what shall we liken the Kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall we picture it? It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds of the earth; but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade.” – Mark 4:30-32 NKJV

The contrast between the size of the seed and the mature plant has everything to do with the Designer. The tiny seed contains the potential for large sturdy branches. It may start very small, but once placed in the ground, growth follows. However, as amazing as mustard seeds are, they must be sown for the germination process to begin. It can be something done, said, given-up, started, shared, prayed for, and more. What “mustard-seed” do you need to sow in faith today?

Sowing

The seed parable is a powerful illustration. Found in Luke 8:4-15, it describes four different results of the same seed falling onto the ground. A combining of the story with Jesus’ explanation paints four different pictures:

  • The Hard Soil-no fruit at all (seed stolen by the devil)
  • The Rocky Soil-grows quick, but soon withers (fell away during testing from lack of roots)
  • The Thorn-filled Soil-growth choked out by thorns (the cares and pleasures of this world preventing maturity)
  • The Good Soil-growth, maturity and fruit (a heart desiring to hear, respond, and endure)

Consider these three reminders today:

  • The seed contains life-Jesus emphasized the seed (the Word) and the soil receiving it, not the sower. The seed itself produces life, not the one handling it or the clever use of it.
  • The results aren’t up to the sower-It’s not productive to attempt forcing growth where it’s not happening, nor is it right to claim credit when it does (1 Cor. 3:6-7).
  • Time is the test-Eventually, the nature of the soil and the response to the truth will become clear; be prayerfully patient.

Be a sower. Whether it’s spoken, written, emailed or tweeted; God’s Word is life-giving. How will you share it today?

Labels

People will label you various ways; “nice”, “mean”, “attractive”, “talented”, “clumsy”, etc. Some are welcome-some aren’t. In the Bible, there’s a lot of people who knew about labels. One of them encountered Jesus while in a lifestyle so “colorful” the entire town knew of it. But when Luke introduces her, she had recently received a new label. Luke records that she went into a dinner gathering at Simon’s house to express her love and gratitude to the Lord. After washing His feet with her tears, she opened an alabaster flask and anointed Him with an expensive, fragrant oil (which created a stir). After making a point with an illustration of creditor and debtor, Jesus turned to the woman and spoke the most important words any of us could ever hope to hear:

“Your sins are forgiven…your faith has saved you. Go in peace.” – Luke 7:48-50 NKJV

As broken, self-centered people, what could possibly compare to the status of “forgiven” as we stand before Holy God? Through gracious love, He’s given us something we couldn’t earn in a thousand lifetimes; followed by the words “Go in peace.” Not only is there a redeemed status, there’s a soul-deep resonance of peace.

In the Christian life, there’s nothing more central to who we are than the precious, costly label of “Forgiven”. How will you wear it today?

Burdens

Sometimes the journey of faith is filled with “stumped toes” and “skinned knees”. Do you ever feel like sitting down, tending to your wounds, and giving up? If so, you’re not alone. Jesus understands your struggles. Think about that for a moment; He actually, literally, in a real-life-work-a-day-world understands your challenges. As a matter of fact, He may be the only one that really understands, because He not only knows the circumstances, He knows you inside-and-out. For a disciple, it’s good to occasionally hear the following words:

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest in your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30 NKJV

The original word-picture is a young ox being teamed up with a strong, experienced one for learning and support. Jesus encourages us to relax in our spirit and find true rest for our souls while still moving forward. Only He can provide that. If you’re feeling tired and beat-up today, lean into Him. His yoke is easy and His burden is light.

Humility

Don’t confuse humility with weakness. A person can be in a position of weakness, or forced into submission, and still not have humility. Humility only comes when there is a decision of the will. A strong will can be a positive thing (such as a person deciding not to let difficult circumstances break them and standing strong in the Spirit), but more often than not, the challenge is on the negative side. It can be when pride encourages our will to resist the Lord’s authority in certain areas of our life.

Consider the Roman commander that sent messengers to Jesus with a request for Him to heal his servant. The officer said he wasn’t worthy for Jesus to enter his home, but asked Him to simply speak the words and it would be so. The interesting part is how he framed the request:

“Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one ‘Go’ and he goes; to another, ‘Come’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this’ and he does it.” – Luke 7:7-8 NKJV

The next verse describes how Jesus responded with a great endorsement by saying:

“I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel.” – Luke 7:9b NKJV

Even though the man had power, prestige and the authority to command, he recognized the Lord’s supremacy and ultimately that’s what he’s remembered for. How will you view the Lord’s authority today?

Rock

Wise builders start with a solid foundation. If the substructure is faulty, what’s above will eventually crumble. Jesus said not everyone who says “Lord, Lord” shall enter the Kingdom. Consider His words:

“Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” – Matthew 7:22-23 NKJV

He goes on to connect that statement to the picture of wise and foolish builders (v.24-27). He said the wise builder is the one who hears AND does. He’s the one who takes the words, and puts in the effort to establish a foundation deep-down on the rock. The foolish builder rushes to construct something without concern for foundational integrity. Eventually, the wind and rain come; and only the one built on the rock survives.

Following Christ isn’t about being able to speak His name, it’s about a relationship. It’s knowing Him and Him knowing you. Is your life anchored firmly to the Rock? Hopefully it is. And if so, what will hearing AND doing look like today?

Wisdom 18.10

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” -Proverbs 18:10 NKJV

In ancient times, a “tower” was where people knew to go for security and provisions during an attack. As the people of God, He’s our source of security and provision; and when the enemy threatens, take refuge in Him.

Fruit

In several different ways, scripture points to fruit as the mark of a disciple’s life. For example, Jesus said:

“You will know them by their fruits.” – Matthew 7:15a NKJV

Sometimes fruit can be clearly seen (like an orchard). Other times, it can be confusing, like a common ornamental “pear” tree that yields no fruit. The difference is the genetics of the tree. The decorative one will never produce fruit for human consumption, because its purpose isn’t fruit, it’s for aesthetic value. Even worse, the decorative species mentioned, is easily destroyed by wind and cut down.

On the other hand, real fruit trees aren’t usually as attractive or symmetrical in shape, but they produce fruit. Year after year, through pruning, fertilization, and hands-on care, their valuable fruit satisfies and nourishes. Even their blossoms are desirable (which is why beekeepers place hives nearby for the bees to gather nectar). What does the fruit of your life look like? Perhaps you occasionally compare yourself to the “decorative” trees and feel oddly shaped. If so, be encouraged today. The Lord’s orchard isn’t about aesthetics, it’s about fruit production.

Pathways

The life of a disciple is not readily understood or embraced by popular culture. Consider how Jesus described the contrast:

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” – Matthew 7:13-14 NKJV

Following Christ is a forward-looking mindset, and this world isn’t our home. However, it’s easy to slip into a lifestyle that’s completely at-home here. It’s the equivalent of decorating a bus-stop bench while waiting for the bus to arrive (mentally knowing the time is short, but practically acting like it’s forever).

What does your path look like today, and what are the markers along the way? Are the checkpoints kingdom-focused or have they drawn more influence from trends and social media? Naturally, all things in the culture aren’t bad (many are quite good), but there are significant points where the paths separate. It’s the defining moments of a life “in Christ” (priorities, attitudes, words, goals, and relationships). May your steps be sure today and your heart be set toward home…

The Lord’s Day 3-5-17

“I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry. He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth- Praise to our God; many will see it and fear, and will trust in the Lord.” – Psalm 40:1-3 NKJV

Where has the Lord brought you from? What has He done in you? Through you? Around you? With gracious love He forgives us, secures a future for us, and blesses us with daily kindness. Will you pause and thank Him? He is worthy of worship, praise and thanks!

Judged

No one likes being judged; especially by someone else’s standards. Jesus gave a rule we call “golden”:

“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” – Matthew 7:12 NKJV

The struggle however is with the item He described leading up to the “therefore”; the plank in the eye (v.3). When vision is obstructed, we’re only able to see what we remember, imagine or perceive to be there. As He taught about the plank and the speck, He also mentioned the result of plank removal:

“…First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” – Matthew 7:5 NKJV

Vision clarity can reveal things not previously known or appreciated. First, we see ourselves as we really are in the mirror of God’s grace. Next, we may discover a quality in someone not previously noticed, or gain an understanding of the underlying cause of their problems. It can also lead to better application of biblical instruction, guidance, and discussion. Plank removal can be one of the most difficult tasks in the life of faith, but it can also be one of the most liberating. How’s your vision today and by what standard will you measure?

Worry

Do you ever struggle with letting God be in charge without trying to look over His shoulder to see if He’s doing it right? Jesus spoke on several occasions about the subject of worry. As He pointed out the simple lifestyle of the birds and the serene beauty of the lilies, He said this:

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” – Matthew 6:33-34 NKJV

There’s an old saying that says, “Don’t borrow trouble from tomorrow”, and it describes the bad habit of burying today’s joy under a pile of tomorrow’s concerns. Tension can grow between our desire for surety and our trust in God’s sovereignty, but it helps to remember that worry is not of the Lord. He doesn’t place it in the heart of His child.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.”

Instead of focusing on the circumstances, the scripture tells us to:

  • Pray through the many things we’re thankful for
  • Honestly discuss our anxieties with God (He already knows anyway)
  • Ask for God’s help with our thought patterns and not just situations

Once this mode of prayer is set in motion, verse 7 promises:

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

That’s a great trade. We give Him our worry and He gives us His peace. What worries do you need to trade-in today?

Eyes

What catches your eye? Jesus spoke of the eye as a lamp…or not:

“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad. Your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” – Matthew 6:22-23 NKJV

True light comes from Christ. He is the “Light of the World” and following Him is to be “in the light” (John 8:12). He mentions the eye as the second illustration of three different ones describing focus (first-“treasure in heaven”, second-“the eye”, third-“serving two masters”). Darkness is the absence of light. It’s the natural state of “lightlessness”. Our eye can easily get misaligned and slowly shift away from the light; bringing an internal eclipse.

Where are your eyes focused today? Is it toward the Light? Light reveals, but darkness hides. In low-light conditions there can be stumbling, falling, misjudgment, and directional challenges. In the Light, there is illumination, steadiness, and directional clarity. What will your focus be today?

Wisdom 17.3

“A crucible for silver, and a smelter for gold, and the LORD is the tester of hearts.” – Proverbs 17:3 HCSB

Pure gold and silver are valuable, but soft. In commercial use, other metals are added to lower the cost or change the properties, while maintaining a shiny appearance. With our hearts, we sometimes want worldly additives to make it “stronger”, but the Lord values purity.

Treasure

What captivates your heart? What pursuit, activity, person or possession do you treasure? Consider Jesus’ words about the heart’s allegiance:

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV

It’s easy to see the cause and effect of worldly gain, because we can experience the tangible benefits. Pursuits such as career advancement and lifestyle upgrades deliver certain amounts of satisfaction, but the life-portfolio of a disciple is based on a forward-looking mindset. It’s a daily contribution noted in a “heavenly ledger”, with the balance reflected across eternity. Material items, career titles, leisure activities, and popularity simply won’t make the cut, but investments in people will.

What captures your heart today and how will you spend your life?

Hidden

Jesus practiced a “hidden” principle in His ministry that He also pointed out to His disciples:

“Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” – Matthew 6:16-18 NKJV

The point of fasting in private isn’t about the reward, it’ about the audience. In private moments, the audience is narrowed down to the Lord. Jesus prioritized time for conversation with the Father; and with it, He often denied the flesh through fasting. He was referencing food, but there can be other types of fasting as well.

The flesh has many forms of appetites and denying them involves the will. Other people’s awareness is inconsequential (unless He leads you to tell them), because the main point is the investment itself. Following through on a private commitment to the Lord can produce eternal results; and a hidden discipline can affect many visible things.

The Lord’s Day 2-26-17

“For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your works; I will triumph in the works of Your hands.” – Psalm 92:4 NKJV

Do thoughts of His work bring gladness to your heart today? Consider the gentleness of His care, the protection of His watch, and the comfort of His provision. For You Lord, have made me glad!

Glory

The way Jesus ended the model prayer tells us a lot about how we should approach everything after the “amen”:

“…For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” Matthew 6:13b NKJV

Acknowledging that the kingdom, the power, and the glory belong to God, is an admission that God is free to do as He pleases. Whether it’s world events or personal matters, God doesn’t need permission to run His world His way. Opinions about cultural issues, political matters or church trends, will ultimately yield to His, because His ways are perfect.

One day, all efforts to honor something or someone more than God will be revealed as vain attempts to claim something only belonging to Him. He has no equal. The kingdom, the power and the glory are all His and His alone…forever…amen.

Are your requests today for His glory or more aligned with your own pursuits? Are you willing to pray for His name to be glorified through you today?

Delivered

Temptation is real, and as close as our thoughts. Jesus never glossed over it, and in the model prayer, He said this:

“…And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:13a NKJV

Our enemy is formidable and dangerous. However, a follower of Christ has the power to overcome him when following the Holy Spirit’s lead. The key part is discerning the difference between the Lord’s leading and our own preferences.

Consider what James wrote:

“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.” – James 1:13-14

Think about how incredible that is. Evil doesn’t tempt God in any way. It doesn’t deceive Him, corrupt His attitude, lure Him into bad choices, or weaken His resolve. For the disciple, the goal should be to stay close to the One who is immune to the daily struggle of figuring it out. He’ll always lead down a path of righteousness because that’s His nature.

Are you willing to stay close today? Are you willing to admit that you need to be led? “…And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

Forgiveness

Forgiveness is part of the Christian life. Consider the fourth phrase in Jesus’ model prayer is:

“…And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”Matthew 6:12 NKJV

Genuinely asking for someone’s forgiveness goes against pride. It’s based on contrition and repentance; whereas superficial requests are self-centered attempts to “save face”. When the real thing takes place, there is joy, thanks, and motivation to show the same attitude toward others. Jesus also mentioned this:

“And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespass.” – Mark 11:25

Being redeemed is forgiveness received, and being a disciple is forgiveness given. For the one seeking to be right with God, both need to be happening (receiving and giving). Thankfully, God’s forgiveness isn’t based on merit, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, ours shouldn’t be either.

Are you willing to forgive today? Are you willing to offer it before being asked to? “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors…”
