Wisdom 2.10

“When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you.” – Proverbs 2:10-11 NKJV

What place is allocated for the Lord’s words in your heart? Is it a prominent, easy-to-reach location, or a forgotten storage box put away in a closet? His solid counsel can calm an uneasy soul, but there must be a willingness to listen. His gracious words can steady unsure steps, but there must be a willingness to follow. And at the end of the day, His guidance can steer a wind-tossed life around the rocks of disaster, but there must be a willingness to let Him take command.

Convictions and Compromise

What are your core beliefs?

In first century Palestine, there were many political alliances and authorities. One of those was a powerful court called the Sanhedrin Council. John refers to the Council this way:

“…many believed in [Jesus], but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.” – John 12:42-43 NKJV

Notice the important detail at the beginning, “many believed” but compromised for fear of losing praise and privilege. Later however, within that same hyper-political environment, Luke mentions this happening after the crucifixion:

“There was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin, who had not agreed to their plan and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God. He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Taking it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever been placed.” -Luke 23:50-53 HCSB

The difference between Joseph and many others was simply this; he acted on his convictions regardless of the threat to his position and status. He may have been timid before, but at the end of the day he stood on his convictions. He was not only willing to be identified with Christ; he was also willing to be involved in the hands-on work of burial.

Do you have core convictions? Are you willing to stand on them today, even if it conflicts with the social norms of your peers or the pressure of “political correctness”? If not, then the beliefs you claim are probably just strong preferences…and not really convictions.

Who’s Blueprints?

Life often doesn’t make sense.

People, circumstances, and timing can lead to wondering about the details of God’s plan. In the early part of the 1st century, the Jews were hoping for the Messiah’s coming, but generations had come and gone without seeing Him. In the meantime, their leaders had developed a well-defined set of events they expected to happen when the Messiah arrived. Unfortunately, it was built on recapturing past glory, instead of God’s plan to do something totally new (Luke 1:26-56).

In the same way, a believer can assume and expect God to work in the same way He has in the past; then imagine a plan of action for Him to execute. However, the Creator of the universe doesn’t follow anyone else’s blueprints; He has His own; and they fit perfectly into the bigger picture.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the LORD upholds him with his hand.” – Psalm 37:23-24 NKJV

Perhaps God has ordained something totally new for your steps today. Will you delight in His way? He upholds us with His hand…

The Lord’s Day 8-26-18

“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor.” – Psalm 8:3-5 NKJV

All the good we know comes from the Lord. The beauty of creation, the skills, talents and abilities of mankind; they all come from the gracious hand of God. Upon that realization, what can our response be but thanks, praise and worship…celebrate the Lord’s Day!

What Do You See?

How big is God in your eyes?

One of the earliest names for God in the Bible is God Most High (Genesis 14:18-20). It’s an awesome description. No matter what we can see or imagine…He’s higher, bigger, and stronger. The sweeping narrative of the Old Testament reveals God’s awesome power in many different ways, but sadly, the Hebrews often forgot. They simply settled for thinking of Him as just another “god”.

What about you? When you pray, what do you see? Is it the image of Him “high and lifted up” in awesome glory as Isaiah, Ezekiel and John described? Do you see Him as God Most High, or someone just barely big enough to handle a pressing crisis? Sure, He’s up to the task, but what if He wants to take you to a place even greater than simply managing your current situation? Trust Him today to be who He says He is:

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor My ways your ways. For as the Heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts higher than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55:8-9

How big is God…in your eyes?

Temperature

Are you a thermometer or thermostat?

Every time the thermostat in your home starts the heat or air-conditioning, it’s because the temperature needs adjustment; and based on its thermometer, action is called for. When a follower of Christ engages others, the same components are there. There’s the ability to sense the current spiritual temperature, and the ability to implement change. However, here’s the challenging question; “Is there a willingness to engage and adjust the temperature of the conversation, or is there contentment to simply reflect the current environment?” Think about what the prophet Micah wrote:

“Mankind, He has told you what is good and what it is the LORD requires of you: to act justly, to love faithfulness, and to walk humbly with your God.”
– Micah 6:8 HCSB

If you only measure temperature, you’ll never be part of helping “condition” a room. At the same time, if you ignore the temp and keep everything blowing full speed, the room will become unbearable.

Being a thermostat will conflict with natural conditions because every time a heating/cooling system kicks on, it’s working to change what nature’s causing; that’s it’s purpose. Will you be part of influencing a room today by acting justly…loving faithfully…and walking humbly?

Versions and Favorites

One day while our son was still too young to read, I heard him “reading” one of his favorite books out loud. He knew the characters and narrated the major points correctly, but the details were off…way off. He was simply using the pictures to make it up as he went. By exercising his “artistic license”, he voiced the good parts, skipped the boring stuff and changed the rest to match his preferences. His story was entertaining, but it didn’t match the author’s version much at all.

We can do that with the Bible too. We can get enthusiastic about verses we like, skip others we don’t necessarily care for, and claim ignorance to the rest. The hard truth however is that a disciple is called to live according to what was given by the Holy Spirit, not our own edited version. Some passages may be tough to understand, but others are just simply tough to live, which is the real reason for their lower position on the “favorites list”.

“All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17 HCSB

Perhaps today would be a good time to shake-up the old “favorites list” and see what else the Author included.

Wisdom 2.6

Who sets the boundaries of your steps? Along the path of life there are many voices speaking their version of “truth”. One of the common calls from the shadows is the phrase, “Follow your heart.” That may sound like wise counsel, but for the follower of Christ, the qualifying question should be, “Does it match the desire of God’s heart?” Consider the words of a wise and experienced man:

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, and preserves the way of His saints.” – Proverbs 2:6-8 NKJV

Today there may be an opportunity to speak a word of instruction; may it come from His knowledge. There may be an opportunity to share your opinion; may it be from within His wisdom. New invitations may be around the corner; may His Word be the standard to compare the options. Who will set the boundaries of your path today?

Wrath

What would God’s wrath look like totally unleashed?

The Bible describes judgment falling on the world during the Flood, His righteous anger burning against Sodom, and destruction of idolatrous groups like the Assyrians; but what would the full, unbridled wrath of God coming down be like? Yes, there are the events of the Revelation yet to come, but the amazing truth is…it’s happened…in full measure…on Jesus. You may be thinking, “Oh, yeah you’re talking about that.”, but pause for a moment and really ponder it.

For three excruciating hours (in total darkness during the middle of the day), Jesus was separated from the Father to endure God’s wrath on sin…our sin. Isaiah 53 says He was crushed, bruised, scorned and despised in our stead. We talk a lot about being redeemed, but it was a painful transaction because sin costs…a lot. It’s easy to take Jesus’ sacrifice for granted, and it’s also easy to go through the week with a casual attitude toward sin. May we never take sin lightly. May we never forget His grace. May we never forget to thank Him for it. And may we never forget to share it.

“For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.” – John 3:16 HCSB

Meditation

Is meditation compatible with the Christian life?

Yes, if it’s the right kind. Biblical meditation is a directive in scripture. It clarifies cloudy judgment, establishes proper boundaries and measures forward progress. The Bible teaches this principle:

8Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthymeditate on these things.” – Phil. 4:8 NKJV

Unlike eastern style meditation, which focuses on emptying the mind, the Bible teaches us to think deeply on scripture and let the Holy Spirit fill our minds with eternal truth.

“I will meditate on Your precepts, and contemplate Your ways. I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.” – Psalm 119:15-16 NKJV

Your thought life matters. If you want your life to be different, you must be willing to think different. Prayerfully ask this today;

What are some things I know to be; True? Noble? Just? Pure? Lovely? Good? Virtuous? Praiseworthy? Now those are things to think about!

The Lord’s Day 8-19-18

“I will praise the LORD according to His righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.” – Psalm 7:17 NKJV

Our singing, meditation, and worship should be focused on His righteousness; not the process or circumstances. Feelings and moods change, but the glory of The LORD Most High does not. Celebrate the Lord’s Day for He is worthy of our praise!

The Song of Moses

Moses isn’t generally known for writing a Psalm, but he did. Psalm 90 is a record of his praise to the Lord. Have you ever thought about the years he kept sheep for Jethro after leaving Egypt the first time, and what he may have learned from it? Here was a man who grew up in the lavish privilege and extravagance in the place of Pharaoh who suddenly found himself on the edge of civilization. And the new environment had only simple provisions, shepherd responsibilities, and a breeze for music…but that’s where he saw the fire and heard the voice of God. Consider this verse from his psalm:

“Before the mountains were born, before You gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, You are God.” – Psalm 90:2 HCSB

How many times while leading the Hebrews through the wilderness did Moses probably stand at the door of his tent, watch the sunset, and think back to those days keeping sheep. Sometimes we simply need to do that; go out on the back deck or take a walk and contemplate God’s rich goodness toward us. Near the end of his psalm are these words:

“And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us…” – Psalm 90:17a NKJV

Have you considered how His beauty is displayed through your life? The many ways He’s been faithful is a testament to His lavish goodness, “…may we rejoice and be glad all our days!” (v.14b)

Three Reminders from Elijah’s Road Trip

Elijah was a mighty Prophet of God. He witnessed spectacular, dramatic and powerful displays of God’s power. However, Elijah was “a man with a nature just like ours” (James 5:17). Even though we’re not calling fire from heaven, there are a few things we need to remember from Elijah’s life. In particular, a few things from his sudden road trip after that little incident with the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel.

  1. God gives us what we need. – When Elijah ran off to the wilderness (under threat from Ahab & Jezebel), he journeyed for a day and fell asleep under a tree. As he slept, an angel woke him up and gave him fresh baked bread and water. He ate, was refreshed and fell back asleep. It was a simple meal, but totally satisfying.

Reminder: Don’t expect a banquet; rejoice in God’s provision for the moment.

  1. God gives us what we need for the next step. – While Elijah slept, the angel woke him again, gave him instructions to eat one more time, “and he went in the strength of that food for 40 days”. The 40 day journey was of the Lord’s leading, and the angel said “it was too great” for Elijah so an extra boost was needed (1 Kings 19:7).

Reminder: God provides for the next step according to His lead, not ours.

  1. God gives us what we need to correct our course. – When Elijah got to Horeb, he took shelter in a cave; but God called him out of the cave to ask why he was there. Elijah described how he was the only faithful person left in Israel. And God responded with an incredible rock-splitting wind, a powerful ground-shaking earthquake, and an earth-scorching fire. However, God wasn’t in any of them. He then revealed Himself in a “still small voice” announcing 7,000 more Hebrews remained faithful and what Elijah needed to do next. (1 Kings 19:11-18).

Reminder: The voice of God is often a quiet contrast to our natural assumptions.

On Fearing Failure

Have you ever been afraid to speak about the Bible for fear of getting it wrong?

For example, you know someone who could use Bible-based encouragement or loving admonishment, but you’re worried you’ll not have the “right words” or worse, no answer at all? Perhaps you feel led to take a step forward in faith, but fear has your feet frozen. If so, take heart; you’re not the only one who occasionally struggles on the spiritual battlefield. Most believers have felt that way at times, but consider this; Romans 8:37 says;

“…we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us”.

Pause for a moment and ponder that reality. You’re a super-victor by way of the strong, battle-proven arm of someone who loves you. He’s not looking for an excuse to abandon you on the field of conflict. As a matter of fact, He’s the One cheering you on among the smoke and chaos. Look in His direction today, realize His faithfulness and draw strength from His power. And if you don’t have the answers; just be honest, say you don’t, then point to the One who does.

Wisdom 1.20

A person of wisdom may seem like someone who’s discovered the “secrets” of life, but in truth, they’re the ones who’ve noticed obvious things around themselves. Here’s how Solomon describes the visibility of wisdom:

“Wisdom calls aloud outside; she raises her voice in the open squares.” – Proverbs 1:20 NKJV

In ancient times, the city square represented the heartbeat of a local culture. It was the gathering place for all things social and economic. Solomon used that word-picture and basically said, “Look around! Observe the lives of those who have chosen a path contrary to God’s truth and learn from it.”

Years later, a famous quote would echo that word-picture:

There are none so blind as those who will not see. The most deluded people are those who choose to ignore what they already know.” – John Heywood (16th century British writer)

Are you looking around today? Really looking? What are you seeing? And what are you learning?

If

What if you found an old letter describing a location in your yard where money was buried? Would you attempt to find it? Of course, most people would, but finding cash among your roses isn’t likely. However, the Bible’s promise of treasure is more certain. Consider Solomon’s instructions:

“My son, if you… receive my words…treasure my commands…apply your heart to understanding…cry out for discernment, and seek [wisdom]…then you’ll understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:1-5 NKJV

Gaining understanding and knowledge from the Lord isn’t a one-time, high-speed download, it’s an active process of listening, pondering, applying, asking, and seeking (7-12). He then goes on to say that incorporating the knowledge of the Lord will protect, preserve, keep, deliver, and lead the learner to walk in the way of goodness (2:20).

The journey of a disciple should be filled with conversation. We’re made for dialogue and when it comes to our spiritual development, the scripture prompts us to think, pray, ask, listen and dig deeper…searching for precious treasure.

What are you pondering today? What are you seeking? Have you mentioned it to the Lord…and are you listening for His reply?

Perspective

Don’t confuse knowledge with wisdom.

Saul the Pharisee was a guy who knew the scriptures. As a matter of fact; with his many years of zealous study and verbatim memorization, he probably mumbled the entire book of Deuteronomy in his sleep. However, after encountering Christ on the road to Damascus; the text that previously made perfect sense in his mind, no longer fit together as before. His “knowledge files” needed some additional sorting and Jesus did just that for him.

God took him away to Arabia for three years to complete his training and reorder his thinking (Galatians 1:15-18). But if he already knew the scriptures so well, why did God set him aside for three years? What else was there to learn? The answer is perspective…God’s perspective, and that usually takes time. James reminds us this way:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God who gives liberally and without reproach and it will be given to you.” – James 1:5

Knowledge is good, wisdom is better…and God’s wisdom is best.

The Lord’s Day 8-12-18

“Oh Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens!” – Psalm 8:1 NKJV

True excellence is defined by the character of God; pure, bright, holy, righteous, and loving. His glory shines all around us and His name is above every name.

Celebrate The Lord’s Day…He is worthy of worship and praise!

Doubt

John the Baptist was rugged, bold and popular. He was a “man’s man” who wore camel hair clothes and lived outside. He fearlessly addressed self-centered leaders with words like “brood of vipers!”, so he wasn’t exactly the timid type. He even declared Jesus the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”. But later, his story took a drastic turn and we read these shocking words:

“And John…sent them to Jesus saying, Are you the Coming One, or do we look for another?” – Luke 7:19 NKJV

Suddenly, the mood changed. Why? It’s because John proved to be human. Not in a sinful, fall-from-grace kind of way, but in a real life, faith-in-motion kind of way. At the point of v.19, John was in prison, having faithfully executed what God commissioned him to do; but doubt crept in. That’s the way it is, you’re walking along with a sense of confidence and the path begins to feel strange and unfamiliar. For John, he had faithfully preached judgment, repentance and the Kingdom, but so far, it appeared nothing was happening. The Romans were still in charge, the Jewish leaders were still corrupt, and he wondered “Could I have been wrong?”

Jesus graciously replied and endorsed John’s ministry by saying, “…among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist…” but He also instructed them to return and tell what they had witnessed; “The blind seeing, the lame walking…etc.” (fulfilling prophecy- Is. 35:5-6).

So, what do you know to be true today? For a moment, set aside the circumstances and ask yourself, “What do I KNOW to be true?” How have you experienced God’s provision in the past and known Him to be faithful? Pause to thank Him for those moments, hold on tight to them, and look forward with confidence because:

“He who calls you is faithful…” (I Thess. 5:24) NKJV

Rest

Does your life need a “pause button”?

When God created the world, He set certain “rhythms” in motion; such as day/night, wake/sleep and growth/dormancy. He even modeled it for us by creating six days, then resting one. If you’ve ever spent extended time in the woods, you’ve probably sensed nature’s “rhythm”. There’s activity, there’s silence, and there’s newness each morning.

In the Psalms, the word “Selah” is placed at strategic points to direct the reader (originally singers) to pause and reflect on the potency of the words. It’s a pattern worth noting and incorporating into daily life…a pause to reflect on the potency of God’s provision, protection, and presence. Consider this question for today:

“Will I incorporate a natural rhythm of work/rest, or will I continue to be “On” 24/7?”

Finding a way to pause and reflect is incredibly valuable. Of course it looks different with everyone, but maybe silencing your phone on occasion, turning off the radio while driving, or cramming less into Sunday afternoon would reveal a “pause button” previously hidden. Unfortunately, the problem of “busyness” is here to stay, but the Lord will provide guidance when asked.

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
– Matthew 11:28 NKJV
