Conversations

Jesus’ mission was based on a heavenly schedule.

He would minister for a time in a certain area, then move on. At the beginning, He was in Judea, and as He left to go back to Galilee, there’s a small travel note:

“But He needed to go through Samaria.” – John 4:4 NKJV

The reason of course, was a strategically planned water-break. When He arrived at the city, He started a conversation with a woman drawing water and eventually met the whole village. There’s much to learn from the dialogue, and the story reveals a golden thread woven throughout; Jesus loved talking to people. He knew the kindling for a spiritual fire would be inside of the woman, and He was going to light it. He spoke truth to her with a spirit of love like she had never known. She couldn’t contain her joy! Her testimony impacted the entire village. Jesus spent two days with them…and the disciples watched and learned.

Who has receptive ears around you? Perhaps they’re the “friendly” ears of a young believer who’s eager to learn. Maybe they’re the ears of a “seeker” who asks questions from time to time. It could even be one who doesn’t necessarily seem interested, but on the inside, has dry kindling for a spiritual fire.

What dialogue do you need to have today? Jesus loved conversations. He still does and will guide ours if we’ll let Him.

Absolute

Jesus came from above. Some would say, “that’s stating the obvious”, but consider the far-reaching implications of “from above” in Jesus’ own words:

“He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all…The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.” – John 3:31,35 NKJV

Jesus’ teachings aren’t just helpful instructions to “sell” people on; they’re absolutes. They’re absolutely true, they’re absolutely real, and they have absolute consequences. Consider the next verse:

“He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” – John 3:36 NKJV

That means Jesus came with authority. He ministered with authority. He reigns with authority. He is decisive, and we serve under His command of the universe! Is fear creeping into your life today? Are you struggling with insecurity? If so, remember these powerful and refreshing words:

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33 NKJV

The Lord’s Day 1-21-18

“Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth! Sing out the honor of His name; Make His praise glorious. Say to God, “How awesome are Your works!”” – Psalm 66:1-3a NKJV

The word “awesome” has become a casual word in conversation, but God truly is awesome. As Creator of the universe, He has no equal. Will you give Him proper acknowledgment today? Will you seek His face and give Him the praise only He deserves?

Decreasing

John the Baptist preached powerful messages, and lives were changed by his words. He also gathered loyal followers; at least that was the case until Jesus came along. Once Jesus started preaching, people left John’s gatherings and joined the crowds listening to Him. Under the circumstances, there was a lot John could have been bitter about (and many would have sympathized with him). However, John’s distinguishing trait wasn’t his ability to call-out the Jewish leadership, it was his tenacious hold on the mission. He rejected the divisive talk about the ones following Jesus, embraced his situation, and pointed to Christ by saying this:

“He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. He must increase and I must decrease.” – John 3:29-30 NKJV

John blazed onto the scene like a zealous, fiery comet; but his goal wasn’t fame. He humbly embraced what was laid before him and trusted God with the details. There may be moments today where the increase/decrease question hangs in the balance for you. What will your response be? “He must increase and I must decrease.”

Uncondemned

Condemned is a status. When someone is tried for a capital crime, found guilty and sentenced to death, their status is “condemned”. For humanity, the status of condemned comes naturally, but there is a reversal of that conviction for all who trust Christ as savior based on the life-giving words of John 3:16. But there’s even more to the story. Consider the motive in heaven that facilitated John 3:16:

“For God did not send His son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” – John 3:17 NKJV

Have you ever stopped to think about how incredible that is? God wasn’t sitting there with gritted teeth and clinched fists, reluctantly agreeing to send His Son on a rescue mission, it was His idea! He originated the plan; and because of His generous love, He provided a divine substitute.

  • Yes, the life of faith can be a struggle…
  • Yes, there are days of failure…
  • Yes, there are missed opportunities, but…

Your status isn’t based on your success; your success is based on your status. And for those who’ve trusted Christ as savior; it’s Uncondemned.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” – Romans 8:1 NKJV

Finishing

It’s been said, “How you finish is more important than how you start.” Such was the case with a man mentioned early in John’s gospel account.

In chapter 3, a Pharisee named Nicodemus is recorded as coming to Jesus at night seeking answers. He wasn’t sure about recent events and was trying to fit the pieces together. Incidentally, part of their conversation is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible;

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16 NKJV

Next, we find him in John 7:50 where he’s encouraging the Jewish leadership to reserve judgment concerning the Lord. He didn’t have the answers at that point, but he knew something was happening inside of him. Sometimes that’s the beauty of the Holy Spirit’s work. You can’t articulate it, but you know He’s doing something.

Finally, we see how he finished. In John 19:39 he stepped forward and helped take down the body of our Lord, anointed it with expensive oil, and assisted with burial. It’s also important to note that it would be three days before the resurrection would validate his faith, but in the meantime, Nicodemus was committed to honoring the Lord. He may have started out timidly in the shadows, but he finished boldly in the Light. How do you plan to finish?

Wisdom’s Prayer

“The ear that hears the rebukes of life will abide among the wise. He who disdains instruction despises his own soul, but he who heeds rebuke gets understanding. The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom, and before honor is humility.” – Proverbs 15:31-33 NKJV

Prayer:

Lord, may I see life from Your perspective today. May Your Word shape these thoughts and may this heart be teachable. Holy Spirit, please speak instructions to this soul and may the steps of these feet, the words of this mouth, and the effort of these hands honor You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Beyond

People love miracles. When Jesus was healing and feeding the crowds, He was their hero; and the atmosphere was exciting. Everyone were pressing in to get a glimpse of what was happening, however, Jesus saw beyond the cheers and accolades. Consider this moment early in His ministry:

“Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.” – John 2:23-25 NKJV

What lay beyond the cheers and accolades were the hearts behind the voices. He knew they were only interested in the sensational. He didn’t rebuke them, belittle them, mock them, or punish them; but He quietly moved on. It can be the same way with us. There can be powerful songs, illustrations or stories that move us to cheers or tears, while the deep chambers of our heart remain unchanged.

What’s in your heart? When you think about the Lord, what’s foremost? Is it Him personally, or something you’re hoping to see Him do? Don’t rush past the quiet in pursuit of the noise, because you may miss the best moment of all.

Dots

Ever seen a children’s dot-to-dot puzzle? Sometimes the truth can be like one; you start with the first dot, move to the next one, and eventually a picture forms. Such was the case with this statement Jesus made to the Jewish leaders:

“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it.” – John 2:19b NKJV

They didn’t understand His real meaning at the time, but John says the disciples eventually did:

“Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had preached.” – John 2:22 NKJV

The Lord was speaking truth, even though they didn’t “get it” until later. Jesus never anxiously rushed the revelation of truth for fear of being misunderstood, because He was working according to the Father’s timeline. He knew they would eventually see the picture formed from the “dots” and what a powerful realization it would be!

Along the journey of faith, there are dots all around. Sometimes they’re connected, and other times not. Perhaps you’re trying to connect some right now. If so, remember who’s placing the dots, because the moment the picture comes together, it will be amazing!

Angry

Jesus got angry. As a matter-of-fact, He made a whip with His own hands and “laid leather” to the backs of those He was angry with:

“And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables.” – John 2:14-15 NKJV

And while the dust was settling, He said:

“Take these things [doves] away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” – John 2:16b NKJV

Jesus showed anger without sinning; so what does that mean for us? It means we see Him being zealous for the right things. In John chapter 2, it was for God’s house. He wasn’t angry over decorum, protocol, or social cause, He was angry over the corruption of purpose. However, it doesn’t provide us a license to let off steam when we want to. Jesus’ actions were deliberate, not from the loss of self-control (such as Moses striking the rock in the desert).

So what angers you and how do you handle it? Does it stay within the boundaries of zeal for the right things, or does it slip into reaction or bitterness toward someone? It can be tough to navigate, but Jesus knows what it feels like. Prayer is an absolute necessity for discerning the difference.

“Be angry and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord.” – Psalm 4:4-5 NKJV

Unclear

Have you ever faced a problem without a clear solution to pray for? Jesus’ Mom did. Her friends were out of wine at their wedding feast (which was a substantial issue considering the structured nature and social implications of such celebrations). She knew who to go to, but she asked nothing. She didn’t ask Jesus to go buy more or to help calm the quests; she simply said, “They have no wine.”

Then Jesus replied: “Woman, what does your concern have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”

And Mary declares: “Whatever He says to you, do it.”  – John 2:3a-5b NKJV

At this specific point, the solution was still unclear. Even after Jesus gave the instruction to fill the pots with water, it still wasn’t clear, because the miracle of the wine didn’t happen until they drew out of the pots. Sometimes, life can present us with similar moments. Situations can arise where there isn’t a clear direction to pray for and those are the times to simply share with Him, then wait for the next word. And the next word may be something less-than-miraculous like; “get up from your desk and take a walk”, “text _________ and say hello”, etc. After that, the solution may come, but you have to draw the water first, then wait for what’s next.

Seeking

We all have questions. Even Jesus asked questions. As a matter of fact, He asked a lot of questions, but not for need of more information. His questions were for the listeners’ benefit. In John 1, we find:

“Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” – John 1:35-39a NKJV

What were they seeking?

Since these two men (John & Andrew) were already disciples of John the Baptist, they were obviously interested in spiritual things, but throughout the gospels the disciples dreamed of a glorious earthly kingdom. One-by-one those desires had to be slowly set aside to “follow” Jesus. He directed them to:

“…seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” – Matt. 6:33 NKJV

What are you seeking today? Are your prayers and goals kingdom-oriented? “Seek first His kingdom…”

Wisdom 15.16

“Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure with trouble.” – Proverbs 15:16 NKJV

Peace that comes from abiding in God’s presence is more valuable than the deceptive promises of worldly things. It also generates a contentment that sets the heart at ease; even when the nearby environment is not.

Tempted with Opportunity

Satan offered Jesus a short-cut to glory. For the last wilderness test, the temptation of convenience was for sale. And with the worldly kingdoms on display, this was how the sales pitch went:

Satan: “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

Jesus: “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”  – Matthew 4:9-10 NKJV

Scholars note the emphasis of the verb in Satan’s offer means “just once”. In other words, he’s saying, “Just acknowledge me as the one in charge, then you can avoid the cross and still get the kingdom.” But the cross was the very reason He came and what moved Him forward. It was the price of redemption and He loved us too much to take short-cuts.

Satan still seeks worshipers through false religions, self-centered pursuits, and other offerings, but only God is worthy of worship. He is the only one worthy of titles such as: Creator, Almighty God, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Ancient of Days, The Great I Am, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace and Savior! How will you acknowledge Him today, and what service will you offer?

Tempted with Insecurity

Jesus again was tested in the wilderness, and Satan challenged Jesus’ scripture-based rebuttal with a passage quote of his own:

Satan: “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down [from this pinnacle], for it is written ‘He shall give His angels charge over you’ and ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus: “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”  – Matthew 4:6-7 NKJV

The temptation to grab control was hidden within the taunt. You can sense the sneering sarcasm as if he was saying, “Ok, you want to reference scripture; how about the one promising God’s protection? You’re supposed to be the Son of God, so prove it!”

There was no question God was watching over Jesus. Only a few weeks earlier, the Father had audibly endorsed Him while coming up from baptism. However, at this early stage, there were no crowds or dinner invitations yet, only wilderness. So why not start things off with a “bang”? After all, the message was supremely important, wouldn’t a little side-show action be good to generate some interest? No, Jesus was secure in who He was, and God was working a better plan to authenticate His Son; resurrection from the dead.

Are you secure with who you are in Christ? There’s nothing to prove to others, except authenticity; and that means living faithfully and sharing the truth as best you can.

The Lord’s Day 1-7-18

“Therefore by Him, let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name.” – Hebrews 13:15 NKJV

Have you made the decision to praise Him today? Even though days and moods may change, our incredible God never does. He’s ALWAYS worthy!

Tempted with Logic

Jesus was tested in the wilderness. It was a barren place and He was physically weakened from forty days of fasting. By contrast, Adam and Eve were in a perfect place; well-fed and comfortable. In both situations, each one faced Satan’s trickery, but only Jesus emerged victorious.

For Jesus, the first test was physical, but had spiritual implications. Jesus’ body was needing food. There was nothing inherently sinful about bread, but the Holy Spirit had led Jesus to abstain. The interaction went like this:

Satan: “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

Jesus: “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”   – Matthew 4:3-4 NKJV

Food at that moment was not part of God’s plan. Jesus’ body was needing nourishment, so the suggestion to make bread would have been logical, but not of God. And whether it was teaching, performing miracles, taking journeys, or spending time in prayer, Jesus’ path always followed the Father’s will. Along the journey of faith, we too can face temptations that make “logical” sense. Natural appetites can be strong, but Jesus overcame them; and through Him we can too. Not by bread alone, but by every word…

Clarification

When John the Baptist began preaching about the kingdom, his words were received in different ways. He preached about repentance and a lifestyle that reflected a change of direction. Specific groups of people even asked what the “fruit of repentance” was for them (tax collectors, soldiers, etc. Luke 3:10-14). However, with the religious leaders, the conversation was different and John spoke directly to the heart of the matter:

“And do not think to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” – Matthew 3:9-10 NKJV

The leaders’ problem was a sense of entitlement. Throughout the gospel accounts, the spirit of entitlement would prevent many from hearing Jesus’ message clearly. From the religious leaders wanting to maintain their positions, to the people wanting a David-type kingdom; the listeners often heard only what they wanted to.

The message of the gospel and the journey of a disciple is all about heart issues; but it’s not just about feeling better either, it’s also about being better…doing better…in Christ. Are you hearing everything He’s saying, or just the parts you want to hear? What’s He leading you to do today?

Boldness

John the Baptist was a firebrand. He was rugged, outspoken, and confident. People flocked to hear him, and his name was a regular topic around the marketplace. But how did John “the son of Zacharias”, eventually become “John the Baptist”? It was his calling. John was the last of a long line of Old Testament prophets. His conception was miraculous and his upbringing unusual:

“So the child grew and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.” – Luke 1:80 NKJV

Many men probably wanted to be like him, however, his sermons weren’t just passionate soapbox rants, they were preparing the way for the Son of God. There’s a difference between God-ordained strong words and man-produced ones. John’s goal wasn’t to be popular, famous or “cool”, he was speaking from years alone in the desert with God. When he spoke, he used specific words given to him by the Lord, for the Lord’s people, and for the Lord’s purposes.

Sometimes in the life of faith, there’s a desire to speak strong words, but there hasn’t been any “desert time” first. The words of a disciple should reflect time spent with Him. In the meantime, silence may be the “word of the day”. When He does move your spirit to speak, do so with confidence, humility, love, and His purpose as the goal.

Wisdom 14.34

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.” – Proverbs 14:34 NIV

When absolute truth is rejected, there’s no anchor to hold a culture steady; and only the infusion of God’s truth can prevent the inevitable. What “lines of truth” secure you as the culture is being tossed about?
