Opinions

Opinions are endless. Each day, they’re printed, posted, tweeted, spoken, and advertised; but at the end of it all, these words will still be true:

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bring forth its fruit in due season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.

The ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish.” – Psalm 1:1-6 NKJV

As believers, we must choose to focus our attention on the refreshing truth of God and not worry over the presence of the misguided; no matter how loud and obnoxious they are. Their apparent “wins” can unsettle the peace within us if we allow them to, but God says the way of the unrighteous will perish; and in reality, it’s just the noise of a doomed agenda.

So what opinions are influencing you today and from what source does they come?

Joshua

In our culture that’s traded truth for tolerance, the concept of a line in the sand regarding values may be considered extreme. However, in a similar environment, Joshua (as leader of the Hebrews after Moses) made a bold statement doing exactly that. Take a look:

“And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the river, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”     – Joshua 24:15 NKJV

Joshua’s statement in verse 15 comes after a brief recounting of God’s faithfulness to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses. It wasn’t a random comment. It was deliberate, bold statement representing the way he led his household; which was to follow God’s standards, instead of carnal, pleasure-centered idolatry.

The truth is, an obedient life has always been a contrast to the lost world. It’s been true since the beginning when Abel’s life contrasted Cain’s.

So where are your lines? Have you taken a stand and said “As for me and my house…”? It’s not a phrase to be uttered or displayed lightly – “Choose for yourselves this day…”

Advent-Week 2-Love

“Love, in the purest form, is defined by the nature of Jesus Christ.”

“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” – John 15:12 NKJV

Remembrance

Sometimes it’s good to pause and linger on these truths…

“Remember the former things, those of long ago,
I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like Me.”

(The gods of this world are dead. The belief systems of this world are powerless, but our God is unmatched and indescribable…)

“I make known the end from the beginning,
from ancient times, what is still to come.
I say: My purpose will stand,
and I will do all that I please.”

(From the start, He saw both ends of time. His ways are unpredictable and beyond our limits…)

“From the east I summon a bird of prey;
from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose.
What I have said, that will I bring about;
what I have planned, that will I do.” – Isaiah 46:9-11 NIV

(His word is sure, His heart is true, His hand is steady, and His way is best!)

Encouragement

Our souls long to know there’s more to this life than what we see.

In the daily routine, there can be ups, downs, and boredom. Relationships can bring encouragement, but quite often; discouragement. The first century Christians knew the taste of discouragement. They knew what it was like to look out over their own cities and know the tide of public opinion had turned against them. They knew what it felt like to be lied about, threatened and rejected by those who once welcomed them.

Peter, a man who knew the highs and lows of a spiritual journey, wrote letters of encouragement and challenge. He had first-hand knowledge of personal failure, but he wrote these great words to remind us how to soar:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved for you in heaven.” – 1 Peter 1:3-4 NKJV

If the foundation of your soul needs strengthening today, perhaps the following anchor points will help secure it. There is:

  • Abundant mercy (lavish and gracious)
  • Living hope (alive and new every morning)
  • Inheritance incorruptible (untouchable by the world)
  • Reserved for you (He knows your name)

May these truths encourage your spirit today…

Boundaries

Who sets the boundaries of your steps?

Along the path of life there are many speaking their own version of truth, and the world’s intellectual leaders offer savory concessions to “taste-test” as you pass by. One of the common calls from the shadows is the phrase, “Follow your heart.” On the surface, the words may sound right, but for a follower of Christ, the qualifying question should be, “Does it match the desires of God’s heart?” Consider the counsel of a wise and experienced man:

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, and preserves the way of His saints.” – Proverbs 2:6-8 NKJV

Today there could be an opportunity to speak a word of instruction; may the counsel come from His knowledge. An opportunity to share an opinion could present itself; may it be rooted in His wisdom. New invitations could appear around the corner; may His Word be the standard for comparing the options. And sometimes, those conversations happen only within our own mind, as we try to decide a next step. Who will set the boundaries of your path today?

Wisdom 13.10

“By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well-advised is wisdom.” – Proverbs 13:10 NKJV

Prudent decisions rarely come from knee-jerk reactions, and if we’re not careful, self-centered thoughts and peer-pressure can affect our judgment. Counsel that lines up with biblical principles is always the one to trust, even if it goes against previous methods, personal preferences, or cultural norms.

Praise

There’s something about music that “strikes a chord” within us. Some people are more naturally “musical”, but all of us have the capacity to “sing” within our souls. It may be the lyrics of an old hymn from childhood, a praise song from church, or the lyrics of an ancient Hebrew psalm. For Isaiah the Prophet, it was a natural reflection of what His heart knew was true (regardless of the world around him). At his commissioning, he had seen the throne of God and the glory of His presence. His assignment was during dark times in a country filled with evil people, but he KNEW in his heart that Jehovah was still sovereign! He may or may not have been inherently musical, but his heart knew how to sing and he instructs those of us who love God to give praise. Consider:

“Praise the Lord, call upon His name; declare His deeds among the peoples, make mention that His name is exalted. Sing to the Lord, for He has done excellent things; this is known in all the earth.” – Isaiah 12:4-5 NKJV

What are the lyrics of your soul today? Is there a rhythm of praise? Sometimes joyful praise seems natural, and other times not so much. Hebrews 11:15 reminds us to offer the “sacrifice of praise” and “thanks to His name”. “Sing to the Lord, for He has done excellent things…”

Hope

One of the most nagging questions on the journey of faith is “Why?”

It hangs around waiting for an opportunity to jump into our thoughts during life’s struggles. It can be relentless and over the centuries, believers in every generation have wrestled with it. Sometimes the answers come, but when they don’t, the first casualty is hope. The scripture records much about hope; hope lost, hope found, hope weakened and hope strengthened.

For the believer, hope is not only based on experience, but also tied to promises. Warren Wiersbe says, “We live on promises not explanations.” What are the promises? There are many, but here are two for today:

  • First, Jesus says to us, My grace is sufficient… – 2 Corinthians 12:9
  • Second, Jesus’ presence is, …the hope of glory. – Colossians 1:27

His graciousness permeates everything. When we consider how all-encompassing His grace is toward us the “Why?” question becomes less important. In addition to that, as we consider the depth of His compassion, hope begins to appear again as His presence braces-up the shaky timbers of our soul.

Do you need hope? Jesus says He will never forsake us, and that means especially in the middle of the battle, or during a struggle with “why?”. When we are weak, He is strong. May your heart be filled with hope…today

Advent – Week 1 – Hope

Biblical hope isn’t a wish, it’s a trust based on the eternal character of God Almighty.

“Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name. Let Your mercy, O LORD be upon us, just as we hope in You.” – Psalm 33:20-22 NKJV

Commended

Medals, ribbons, and certificates, are all methods of being recognized for service, devotion and “going beyond the call of duty”. In the Christian life, there is also recognition, but not from peer acknowledgment. It’s based on Christ’s approval, and concerning the subject, the scripture gives this guidance:

“But he who glories, let him glory in the Lord. For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends.” – 2 Corinthians 10:17-18 NKJV

The competition is fierce, but it’s not against others, it’s against ourselves…and the battle is waged within our hearts. The subtle whispers regarding acceptance, rejection, and popularity can greatly influence our perception of what’s “commendable”. However, the Lord says He’s the One who holds the power to declare what is-and-isn’t worthwhile. What about today’s competition? As the struggle begins, remember:

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.” – 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 NKJV

Will you answer the call of duty? Let’s commit to fight for the things He considers worthwhile…today.

Harvest

A spiritual seed contains life. Whether it’s a word of scripture, a brief testimony, or the sharing of resources and encouragement, tiny grains of life can produce a sizeable harvest because Jesus is the Lord of the Harvest (Matt. 9:38). And regarding the harvest, our main concern is obedience. He knows the proper time for planting, the ideal amount of watering, and the peak time for reaping; but the harvest is still proportionate to the sowing:

“…He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.” – 2 Corinthians 9:6 NKJV

If we’re willing to sow, there will be produce based on the sowing and the motive. Something shared reluctantly may produce some return, but something shared joyfully can produce abundance:

“So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7 NKJV

The heart following the Lord’s lead is like the farmer who happily gets “seed in the ground”, then tenderly nurtures the baby crop to maturity. The Corinthian believers had committed earlier to give an offering to the other churches. It had come time to follow through and Paul was urging them to joyfully complete the task and give proof of their sincerity (8:8).

What’s the Lord of the Harvest leading you to give or do today, tomorrow, or next year? He’s the One that matters.

Sorry

The words “I’m sorry” can be liberating or limiting, depending on sincerity. Genuine sorrow can lead to forgiveness, whereas the attitude of “I’m sorry (that I got caught)” produces nothing good. The Bible explains it this way:

“For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.” – 2 Corinthians 7:10 NKJV

In the life of faith, there are times when the Holy Spirit reveals things that are amiss in our lives. Scripture passages, internal promptings, and other people’s words can prompt reflective moments, which call for a response. Such was the case with the Corinthian church. When they received Paul’s first letter, they had some things to wrestle with, and they responded with repentance.

In the life of a disciple, those times present the question, “Now what?” Godly sorrow is to agree with the Lord, confess, ask forgiveness, and move on. Worldly sorrow makes excuses, blames others, denies, and eventually continues along the same course. God’s love will prompt us in the right direction if we’re willing to listen, and is part of the sanctifying process. Is there anything you need to agree with Him on today? There is freedom in forgiveness, and joy in moving forward.

Wisdom 12.25

“Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a good word cheers it up.” – Proverbs 12:25 HCSB

An encouraging comment from a friend or a random compliment from a stranger can positively change someone’s day; and that friend or stranger can be you. May we speak a “good word” today.

Perfected

Good days, bad days; they’re all part of the Christian life…but you’re perfect.

Even though it may not feel like it, if you’re in Christ, you’re perfect. As a matter of fact, the Bible explains it this way:

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” – 2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV

God’s righteousness is constant, total, and unyielding. According to the scriptures, His righteousness is graciously accounted to us through no merit of our own. However, we still live here in this world with all of its troubles, so what does “perfect” mean for the believer? It means our position before God is based on Christ’s perfection, even though our life on earth is a work in progress. Each day we should walk from a position of victory; not trying to achieve it, but having already been awarded it through faith in Christ. The way it’s lived out is a process of moving forward through confidence in His promises:

“Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” – 2 Corinthians 7:1 NKJV

There is victory today based on His perfection. May we walk in it…

Compelled

In your walk of faith, what motivates you? According to scripture it should be this:

“For the love of Christ compels us…” – 2 Corinthians 5:14 NKJV

The compelling should be love based; Christ’s love for us, and our response of love back to Him. The next verse also adds that those who are in Christ should “…live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them.” (2 Cor. 5:15 NKJV) because through Jesus we are “re-made”. Consider:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold; all things have become new.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV

We are re-made for service and a few verses later (v.20) the job is described as “ambassador”. We are to represent, engage, and plead when necessary as royal representatives. We are sent, empowered and charged with a divine mission to represent the King; a loving King who desires reconciliation with all who will respond.

So what compels you today? Is it the favor, acceptance or recognition of other believers, or is it love for the King? We are ambassadors for Christ…

The Lord’s Day 11-26-17

“Show me your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths, lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I will wait all the day.” – Psalm 25:4-5 NKJV

Consider these points as you prepare for worship:

• A prepared heart is teachable
• A teachable heart can be led
• A led heart will find the truth

Trust

“Confidence” and “expectation” are key parts of “trust”.

When it comes to people, to place trust in someone is to have confidence or expectations regarding their character. The interesting question is, “What produces the confidence or expectation?” Does it come from experience, word of mouth, research, or conversations? Yes, it could be one (or all) of them. And what about faith? Is it the same? The scripture says this:

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7 NKJV

Faith is a “trust-walk”. It’ a confident expectation in Him, regardless of the visual panorama. Sight is an amazing gift, but the visual senses can be deceived. For example, professional illusionists make a living by tricking the audience through slight-of-hand and misdirection. But in the life of faith, what are the things that produce “confident expectation”? It’s the “history”; the previous encounters (with Him), the word of mouth (testimonies), the research (His word), and the conversations (prayer).

Have you stopped lately and considered the previous steps of your journey? Has God ever failed to be faithful to you? Has He ever stopped loving you? Has He ever called you to places He wouldn’t go? Perhaps today is a good time to consider the “history” and move forward by faith, not by sight…

Renewed

How does renewal come from the Lord? Is it something received on Sunday, or at a Bible study? It can be. However, even though gatherings can have a powerful impact, the biblical picture of God’s sustaining often looks more like manna, oil and flour. For example, in 2 Corinthians 4 there’s a list of pressures and difficulties Paul faced while carrying out his mission. It was physically demanding and emotionally draining. He was weakened in every way from the journey, but he points out God’s sustaining power:

“Therefore, we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.” – 2 Corinthians 4:16 NKJV

The Holy Spirit’s renewing is a daily provision. Like manna given to the Hebrews in the wilderness, it can’t be stored up for later unless it’s something God orchestrates (such as the double portion on Fridays to last through the Sabbath). We see the same thing in the widow’s oil and flour when the prophet Elijah went to her house (1 Kings 17). During desperate times, God gave them a miraculous supply of oil and flour (but just enough each day to provide for their needs).

Don’t lose heart, He’s faithful to supply what we need…daily.
