Measures

Why do experienced builders still bother with measuring equipment?

I mean, with all that practice, he should be able to simply take a good look, mark, cut, place and nail without ever consulting a measuring tape or level, right? Not exactly. The experienced builder knows that optical illusions abound when simply “taking a good look” and a proven standard is far better.

So, for a disciple of Christ, what’s our real standard? Is it the specific truth of scripture, or something close that “appears level”? It’s tempting to gravitate toward the verses we prefer and simply create our own spiritual “ethos” based on the principles that challenge us the least, but Jesus taught a complete approach to the life of a disciple. For example, most people agree that lying, stealing, murder or adultery are wrong, but Jesus taught that even contemplating those things is an issue (Matt. 5:28).

Each day can be filled with its own “optical illusions”…what standard will you use?

“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind’. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'” –Matthew 22:37-39 NKJV

Wisdom 3.3

“Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man.” – Proverbs 3:3-4 NKJV

Are the truths of God’s Word being etched into your heart? When it is, mercy naturally begins to take up residence, because where the Word is, there’s a realization of the short-comings within it. The Word also frames the day in a way that helps us to see past the obvious things while looking for the true value of people. “Let not mercy and truth forsake you…”

Unbreakable

Laws are often violated; either on purpose, through negligence, or lack of knowledge. However, there’s one that cannot be broken:

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” – Gal. 6:7 NKJV

It’s always been a profound truth, but today there are cultural forces pushing for a separation between cause and effect. It’s an attempt to avoid accountability for one’s own actions. But a follower of Christ is different. A disciple understands the importance of “cause and effect” and chooses to live according to biblical principles. Even with the wonderful reality of forgiveness, consequences can be unwelcome guests that linger for a long time.

For the disciple, the question isn’t whether something is culturally acceptable for “planting and cultivating”, it’s the question of what the harvest will look like. If we sow to the flesh, we’ll reap fleshly results; and if we sow to the Spirit, we’ll reap Spirit-produced results (Gal. 6:8).

So, to what harvest will your efforts be today? To the flesh or to the Spirit?

“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” – Galatians 6:9 NKJV

Noah

Sometimes evil in the world seems overwhelming, but take a moment to consider Noah. When instructions came for him to build an ark, the world was full of evil. Genesis 6:11 records it this way:

“The earth also was corrupt before God and the earth was filled with violence.”

The times were so bad, God decided to destroy the world as it existed. There was all manner of violence, perversion, and wickedness, however, right in the middle of the description you find these amazing words:

“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” – Genesis 6:8

It’s easy to minimize Noah’s story and think about him as a smiling character painted on the walls of a church preschool room, but his surroundings were anything but family-friendly. Noah lived every day with the soul-wrenching heaviness of seeing what the world had become, but the Bible says he “walked with God”. Think about what that means. His daily routine would have included people mocking his faith and rejecting his warnings; however, he “walked with God and found grace.” Hebrews 11:7 describes him this way:

“By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with Godly fear, prepared an ark…”

Perhaps your routine this week will include people or situations you’d rather avoid. Will you choose to walk with God? “By faith Noah…”

The Lord’s Day 9-4-16

“I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.” – Psalm 9:1-2 NKJV

Genuine praise must come from the heart, and a heart of praise finds much to rejoice in. Emotions may change, but the praiseworthiness of God never does. It’s the Lord’s Day, be glad and rejoice in Him!

Discouraged

Do you ever get discouraged?

Even when things are going well, our spirits can get fatigued. The Prophet Elijah is a great example. After a spectacular victory on Mt. Carmel against the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18), he fled the wrath of King Ahab & Queen Jezebel by hiding in a cave. While there, he had a conversation with God that’s very enlightening (1Kings 19):

The LORD: “What are you doing here Elijah?

Elijah: “I have been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”

Next: Powerful moments of strong wind, a mighty earthquake, and fire. After that… “a still small voice” repeating the question…

The LORD: “What are you doing here Elijah?

Elijah: “I have been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life…”

The LORD: “Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

The Reality: Elijah wasn’t alone after all; he just thought he was. He wasn’t the only one struggling; he just thought he was. The victory wasn’t dependent on him; he just thought it was.

Our Challenge: Do you trust God? Do you really trust Him? Maybe your thoughts are leading you to feel completely alone; you’re not. Maybe your thoughts are causing you to believe no one else struggles; they do. And maybe your thoughts have tied the victory to your ability; it isn’t. Take courage today, because the Lord is near, and He can be trusted…always.

Enoch

In a culture that values celebrity, it’s refreshing to think about Enoch…remember him?

Perhaps not, but that’s what makes his story so amazing. With only a couple of quick mentions in scripture, there’s more unknown about him than known. Consider the two passages describing him:

“And Enoch walked with God; and he was not for God took him.”– Gen. 5:24 NKJV

“By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death and was not found because God had taken him; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.” – Hebrews 11:5 NKJV

Here’s the amazing part…the very next verse in Hebrews:

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” – Hebrews 11:6 NKJV

Let that sink in for a moment. Enoch pleased God so much that He was called home to heaven. However, it wasn’t based on his accomplishments; it was based on his faith. In other words, it wasn’t what he did FOR God; it was his walking WITH God.

Your life story may never be published or made into a movie; but does it really matter? History recorded very little about Enoch, but God knew everything…and that’s ALL that really mattered.

Abel

Why was Abel killed?

Did a fierce argument cause the first murder? Was it a fight over land, gold, or livestock? No, it wasn’t any of those. He was attacked simply for doing the right thing. In Hebrews, he’s remembered this way:

“By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous…” – Hebrews 11:4 NKJV

He wasn’t perfect, but was called righteous because he practiced “right-ness”. He became the victim of rage; not because he had wronged Cain, but because he was accepted by God.

Today, there may be those in your path who are angry with God, but their anger is directed at you instead. God’s not unaware. Like it was with Abel, our first priority is to be faithful and practice “right-ness”. At the end of the day, we’re each responsible for our own actions. So, today as you go, pray for the strength to avoid letting someone else’s attitude negatively affect yours.

Wisdom 2.11

“When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you.” – Proverbs 2:10-11 NKJV

What place is allocated for the Lord’s words in your heart? Are they front-and-center, or simply “in the room” somewhere? His solid counsel can calm an uneasy soul, but there must be a willingness to listen. His gracious words can place anxious steps, but there must be a willingness to follow. And at the end of the day, His guidance can steer a wind-tossed life around the rocks of disaster, but there must be a willingness to let Him take command.

Unanswered

Do your prayers ever seem unanswered?

There’s a beautiful story in Luke of two people who struggled with silence…Zacharias and Elizabeth. They endured daily shame in a culture that believed no children was a sign of hidden sin. However, according to Luke, they were both righteous before God (1:6) and had prayed for a child (1:13). Then suddenly, it happened…an angel appeared to Zacharias and gave him the incredible news that Elizabeth would have a child in her old age. God truly works in unique ways.

So, as you pray, remember:

  • Heavenly activity is going on regardless of your awareness – Luke 1:6 says they were not only righteous, but walked blamelessly regarding commandments and ordinances. They were being observed daily from God’s perspective and their prayers were not forgotten. While they faithfully went about their daily life, God was at work.
  • Silence doesn’t necessarily equal “no” – During the silence, the natural conclusion would have been, “God doesn’t want us to have children.” In truth, He didn’t want them to have children…until the right time. In the meantime, there was a powerful ingredient being sprinkled into Zacharias and Elizabeth’s life. It was the ingredient of “time”. It may have been unwelcome, but was part of the miracle.
  • It’s worth the wait – John was no ordinary baby. Not only was he special in the timing of his birth, he was special in spiritual power. The Bible says he was filled with the Holy Spirit in his mother’s womb (1:15) and grew to be a firebrand in the order of Elijah (1:17). There had been 400 years since the previous prophet and suddenly they were chosen to raise the one preparing the way for the Messiah!

Don’t give up. Keep praying. Stay faithful…and trust Him.

Compromise

What are your core beliefs?

In New Testament times there were many political alliances and authorities. One of those was a powerful court called the Sanhedrin Council. John refers to the Council this way:

“…many believed in [Jesus], but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they be put out of the synagogue: for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.” – John 12:42-43

We see that many believed, but compromised for fear of losing influence. However, within that same hyper-political environment, Luke mentions this happening after the crucifixion:

“There was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin, who had not agreed to their plan and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God. He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Taking it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever been placed.” -Luke 23:50-53

The difference between Joseph and many others was simply this; he acted on his convictions regardless of the threat to his position and status. He may have been timid before, but at the end of the day he stood on his convictions. He was not only willing to be identified with Christ; he was also willing to be involved in the work of burial.

Do you have core convictions? Are you willing to stand on them today, even if it conflicts with the social norms of your peers? If not, then they’re probably just strong preferences, and not really convictions.

The Lord’s Day 8-28-16

“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor.” – Psalm 8:3-5 NKJV

All the good we know comes from the Lord. The beauty of creation, the skills, talents and abilities of mankind; they all come from the gracious hand of God. Upon that realization, what can our response be but thanks, praise and worship…celebrate the Lord’s Day!

Blueprints

Life often doesn’t make sense.

People, circumstances, and timing can lead to wondering about the details of God’s plan. In the early part of the 1st century, the Jewish people were hoping for the Messiah’s coming, but generations had come and gone without seeing Him. In the meantime, their leaders had developed a well-defined set of events they expected to happen when the Messiah arrived. Unfortunately, it was built on recapturing past glory, instead of God’s plan to do something totally new (Luke 1:26-56).

In the same way, a believer can assume and expect God to work in the same way He did in the past; then imagine a plan of action for Him to execute. However, the Creator of the universe doesn’t follow anyone else’s blueprints; He has His own; and they fit perfectly into the bigger picture.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the LORD upholds him with his hand.” – Psalm 37:23-24 NKJV

Higher

How big is God in your eyes?

One of the earliest names for God in the Bible is God Most High (Genesis 14:18-20). It’s an awesome description. No matter what we can see or imagine…He’s higher, bigger, and stronger. The sweeping narrative of the Old Testament reveals God’s awesome power in many different ways, but sadly, the Hebrews often forgot. They simply settled for thinking of Him as just another “god”.

What about you? When you pray, what do you see? Is it the image of Him “high and lifted up” in awesome glory as Isaiah described? Do you see Him as God Most High? Or is He just barely big enough to handle your current situation? Sure, He’s up to the task, but what if He wants even greater things for you. Trust Him today to be who He says He is:

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor My ways your ways. For as the Heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts higher than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55:8-9

How big is God…in your eyes?

Temperature

Are you a thermometer or thermostat?

Every time the thermostat in your home starts the heat or air-conditioning, it’s because the temperature needs adjustment; and based on its thermometer, action is called for. When a follower of Christ engages others, the same components are there. There’s the ability to sense the current spiritual temperature, and the ability to implement change. However, here’s the challenging question; “Is there a willingness to engage and adjust the temperature of the conversation, or is there contentment to simply reflect the current environment?” Think about what the prophet Micah wrote:

“Mankind, He has told you what is good and what it is the LORD requires of you: to act justly, to love faithfulness, and to walk humbly with your God.” – Micah 6:8 HCSB

If we want to be a thermostat and only measure temp, you’ll never be part of helping “condition” a room. At the same time, if you ignore the temp and keep everything blowing full speed, the room will get really hot, or really cold.

Striving to be a thermostat will go against the flow. Come to think of it, every time a heating/cooling system kicks on, it’s going “against the flow”. That’s what it’s made for. Will you be part of influencing a room today?

  • Act justly
  • Love faithfulness
  • Walk humbly

Wisdom 2.6

Who sets the boundaries of your steps? Along the path of life there are many voices speaking their version of “truth”. One of the common calls from the shadows is the phrase, “Follow your heart.” At first, that may sound right, but for the follower of Christ, the qualifying question should be, “Do they match the desires of God’s heart?” Consider the words of a wise and experienced man:

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, and preserves the way of His saints.” – Proverbs 2:6-8 NKJV

Today there may be an opportunity to speak a word of instruction; may it come from His knowledge. There may be an opportunity to share your opinion; may it be from within His wisdom. New invitations may be around the corner; may His Word be the standard to compare the options. Who will set the boundaries of your path today?

Versions

One day while our son was still too young to read, I heard him “reading” one of his favorite books out loud. He knew the characters and narrated the major points correctly, but the details were off…way off. He was simply using the pictures to make it up as he went. By exercising his “artistic license”, he voiced the good parts, skipped the boring stuff and changed the rest to match his preferences. His story was entertaining, but it didn’t match the author’s version.

We can do that with the Bible too. We can get enthusiastic about verses we like, skip others we don’t care for and claim ignorance to the rest; but a disciple is called to live according to what’s written, not our own edited version. Some passages may be tough to understand, but others are just simply tough to live, which is the real reason for their lower position on the “favorites list”.

“All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” -2 Timothy 3:16-17 HCSB

Are you willing to attempt it today as written?

Wordless

Sometimes there are no words.

Hurt, grief, discouragement, and disappointment are just some of the things words can’t properly frame. Whether attempting to talk to someone, or attempting to pray, words can lack the ability to properly communicate feelings. The secret is; they don’t always have to because our value as a friend or a child of God transcends words.

For example, just the sight of a close friend can lift a spirit; and a hug can be worth an hour of talking. It’s the same with God, but on an even deeper level. He doesn’t need words to understand us, or to connect with our heart. Words can be used in prayer of course, but there are moments when the Holy Spirit steps in and communicates on our behalf in ways only He understands. Paul explained it this way:

“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” – Romans 8:26-27 NKJV

Prayerful quiet can often start a conversation you didn’t know was needed. Are you short of words today? He understands.

The Lord’s Day 8-21-16

“I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.” – Psalm 7:17 NKJV

Our singing, meditation, and worship should be focused on His righteousness; not the process or circumstances. Feelings and moods change, but the glory of Jehovah does not. Celebrate the Lord’s Day for He is worthy of our praise!

Wrath

What would God’s wrath look like totally unleashed?

Well, the Bible describes His judgment falling on the world during the Flood, His righteous anger burning against Sodom, and destruction of idolatrous groups like the Assyrians; but what would it look like for His wrath to be poured out in full measure? The amazing truth is it was…in full measure…on Jesus. You may be  thinking, “Yeah I knew that.”, but pause for a moment and really think about it…

For three excruciating hours (in total darkness during the middle of the day), Jesus was separated from the Father to endure God’s wrath on sin…our sin. Isaiah 53 says He was crushed, bruised, scorned and despised in our stead. We talk a lot about being redeemed, but it was a painful transaction because sin costs…a lot. It’s easy to take Jesus’ sacrifice for granted. It’s also easy (and acceptable) to go through the week without being broken for those who don’t know Him. May we never take sin lightly, and may we never forget His grace. Perhaps today would be a good time to thank Him.

“For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.” – John 3:16 HCSB
