Reflections

Why is there a “New Year”? Is it because we simply continue celebrating celestial events like the ancients did? For many it probably is, but there’s more to the story. Linear time was created with the rest of the universe. God exists outside of linear time. He’s not constrained by it, but He chose to make us with a connection to it. The wisdom of the “preacher” in Ecclesiastes provides a beautiful picture of the rhythm of life;

“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven…” – Eccl. 3:1 NKJV

God created us with a relationship to the cyclical nature of things “under heaven”. As we embark on a new year, it’s a perfect time to consider past, present and future. Just as we need rest, we also need to take a moment to pause and reflect. Here’s a simple prayer as you go:

“Lord, when I reflect on last year, please remind me of who and what you provided (or removed). When I think about today, please show me who and what to appreciate. And as I consider the new year, please help me leave behind what I’ve been forgiven for, to not worry over what I can’t change, and to walk in a way that honors You.”

The Lord’s Day 12-31-17

“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, therefore I will hope in Him!” – Lamentations 3:22-24 NKJV

Hope in Christ is a daily refreshment, and His kindness greets us each day as a reminder of His unfailing love. He is worthy to be praised today!

Amazed

Jesus chose to set aside His glory, take on flesh, and be one of us. Because of that, He initially had to go through a growth process. There’s a story recorded of Him engaging the temple leaders in conversation when He was twelve. Luke describes His actions this way as Joseph and Mary were walking in:

“…sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers” – Luke 2:46b:47 NKJV

Jesus was conversational. Even before He had fully reached maturity, He was perplexing those who considered themselves “learned”. His purpose wasn’t to embarrass the temple leadership, He was just being Himself. He was naturally drawn to conversation about spiritual and scriptural things. It was His method then, and still is now. Through the Holy Spirit, conversation can be happening any time; and in a healthy conversation there’s time to talk and time to listen.

Has He amazed you lately? He still astonishes if we’re willing to talk and listen; especially if we’ve started considering ourselves “learned”. We may not always understand the answers, but the time is most assuredly well spent.

Detours

Have you ever been driving along when a detour sign forces you off-course? The road of life can be that way too, and you’ve probably experienced it; having a route all planned when someone walks up holding a “detour sign” in the form of unexpected news. Joseph and Mary did. As they were settling into the routine of raising their first child, an angel appears speaking words of detour:

“Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.” – Mathew 2:13 NKJV

Rarely are detours welcomed, even if they’re the result of our own choices. Most people don’t make plans hoping for someone else to change them; and the hours, weeks, months or years, spent “off-course” can feel wasted. Egypt hadn’t been part of Joseph’s plan for his young family, but it was God’s way of protecting them. Not only did He send an angel to warn and instruct them, He sent Magi with lavish gifts to fund the journey. God is incredibly gracious that way. He’s always mindful of our location, and will provide what we need as we go.

Where are you today on the journey? Perhaps you’re just getting back on course or you’ve just recently noticed a warning sign ahead. If so, God is still in control…in Egypt and beyond.

Focus

Simeon’s biography in Luke’s gospel is an “espresso” passage (small serving size, but strong content). He’s described as just, devout, and waiting for the Consolation of Israel. The Holy Spirit leads him to the Temple to see Jesus. As he holds Him in his arms, Simeon speaks these words:

“Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation which You have prepared before the face of all the peoples, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel.” – Luke 2:29-32 NKJV

Look at the focus of his words:

  • You are letting
  • Your servant
  • Your word
  • Your salvation
  • You have prepared
  • Your people

Notice the absence of “me”, “my”, and “mine”. Even though he was being rewarded for his faithfulness (and could have felt very prideful), there was an outward focus on God, His plan, and others being included. It revealed the humble heart of a man who couldn’t have known he would be memorialized forever in scripture. His life was lived with a “Your” mindset; how about you today?

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up.” – James 4:10 NKJV

Wisdom 14.26

“In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and His children will have a place of refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death.” – Proverbs 14:26-27 NKJV

Do you have a healthy fear of the Lord? When you consider Him, do you sense the awesome power of His presence, while also knowing the kindness of His love? Prayerfully seek Him today and pray for others to embrace Him for who He really is…Awesome God, Sovereign King, and Gracious Savior. That’s the point of deep appreciation and where confidence begins to grow.

Expectations

God recognizes no boundaries but His own.

When Jesus was born, the stable wasn’t an unwanted by-product of a crowded town, it was the plan. The timing wasn’t unforeseen, nor the circumstances. Jesus was born a Jew, within the confines of what God had ordained all along. On the eighth day, He was presented:

“And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.” – Luke 2:21 NKJV

It’s easy to overlook the importance of the fact that Jesus had to come, live, die and rise again in a specific way to become our substitute. The Law and Old Covenant was a precious part of God’s redemptive plan. It defined perfection to His standards, and He alone fully met the requirements. Along the faith journey, we can subconsciously forget that God operates within His own boundaries. God will always act within His righteous nature.

When life presents choices and we’re looking to God for help, the statement of “I know what the Bible says, but…” is a bad place to start. Jesus faced pressure every day to act in ways according to people’s expectations, but He rarely did. He operated within the constraints of His own words given to the Prophets years earlier.

How do you see God’s plan for your life? Does it match up with a scriptural definition of a disciple, or some “reasonable” mixture of pop-culture and faith?

“…If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.” – John 8:31b NKJV

Advent – Week 4 – Peace

“True peace is more than an absence of conflict, it’s the abiding presence of God.”

“…and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, “God with us”.” – Matthew 1:23b NKJV

Immanuel

For Joseph and Mary, the crude surroundings and odd circumstances of Jesus’ birth probably added to the long list of unanswered questions. What did it all mean?  In the midst of the chaos, there’s a moment Luke describes of calm serenity:

“But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.” – Luke 2:19 NKJV

Something brought a “stillness” to Mary’s heart in the middle of the uncertainty; she had a Baby…the physical presence of Almighty God. She didn’t know what the future held, but she knew she held the future in her arms. What a beautiful moment; a young mother pulling the face of God close to hers as she pondered His majesty. Over the next thirty-three years, how many times would she hug him and be reminded that God was with her?

For our moments of doubt and uncertainty, God is with us. As disciples of Christ, He’s promised never to leave us or forsake us (Matt. 28:20).

  • When there’s fear, Immanuel.
  • When there’s intimidation, Immanuel.
  • When there’s insecurity, Immanuel.
  • When there’s sorrow, Immanuel.
  • When there’s failure, Immanuel.
  • When there’s loneliness, Immanuel.
  • When there’s pain, Immanuel.
  • When there’s abandonment, Immanuel.

He is love. He is joy. He is peace. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. What could be better than “God with us.”? Absolutely nothing.

Joseph

When choosing a husband for His mom/leader of their home, Jesus chose Joseph. We know very little about him, but what information we have is significant. He was a Jewish tradesman with no special social status; but the comment about his character in Matthew is “just”. Here was a man of integrity making plans to start a family with his wife-to-be, when life suddenly got complicated. His future wife revealed she was pregnant (obviously not his) and he had some decisions to make; and he chose compassion. When you also consider the nature of Mary’s character (one that warranted being chosen as the mother of Jesus), the shocking thought of her being promiscuous, must have crushed him. But thankfully, there’s more to the story.

An angel appeared to him, explaining that she had been faithful all along, and the Child was miraculously conceived. Then very succinctly, the scripture records that he, “did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife.” Regardless of the cloud of gossip, he took the Baby to the temple for circumcision on the eighth day, named Him Jesus as instructed, and presented Him with the accompanying offering.

So, what’s the significance of Joseph? Simply this; he was a man who could be “entrusted”. He had an integrity about him that God could use. He may have built houses for a living, but God called him to build a home for the Messiah. Never underestimate the significance of your character, because in the end it determines your significance.

“Then Joseph…being a just man…” – Matthew 1:19 NKJV

Unanswered

Do your prayers ever seem unanswered?

There’s a beautiful story in Luke of two people who struggled with silence…Zacharias and Elizabeth. They endured daily shame in a culture that believed no children was a sign of hidden sin. However, according to Luke, they were both righteous before God (1:6) and had prayed for a child (1:13). Then suddenly, it happened…an angel appeared to Zacharias and gave him the incredible news that Elizabeth would have a child in her old age. God truly works in unique ways.

So, as you pray, remember:

  • Heavenly activity is going on regardless of your awareness – Luke 1:6 says they were not only righteous, but walked blamelessly regarding commandments and ordinances. They were being observed daily from God’s perspective and their prayers were not forgotten. While they faithfully went about their daily life, God was at work.
  • Silence doesn’t necessarily equal “no” – During the silence, the natural conclusion would have been, “God doesn’t want us to have children.” In truth, He didn’t want them to have children…until the right time. In the meantime, there was a powerful ingredient being sprinkled into Zacharias and Elizabeth’s life. It was the ingredient of “time”. It may have been unwelcome, but her age was part of the miracle.
  • It’s worth the wait – John was no ordinary baby. Not only was he special in the timing of his birth, he was special in spiritual power. The Bible says he was filled with the Holy Spirit in his mother’s womb (1:15) and grew to be a firebrand in the order of Elijah (1:17). There had been 400 years since the previous prophet and suddenly they were chosen to raise the one preparing the way for the Messiah!

Don’t give up. Keep praying. Stay faithful…and trust Him.

Wisdom 14.12

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” – Proverbs 14:12 NIV

At the end of it all, our opinions about “what’s right” will be irrelevant. Polling data, legal rulings, academic theories, and cultural norms will all be distance memories in the presence of the Almighty. So, when it comes to what’s right, choose wisely…

Orderly

Confusion can produce all kinds of mistakes; sometimes fatal ones. For those alive in the years following Christ’s resurrection, there was a lot of confusion concerning Jesus. Many had encountered Him during His travels, heard His stories, knew someone He had healed, and so forth, but the picture each person had was limited to their own perspective. Then, at just the right time, the Holy Spirit began moving in the hearts of certain men to write down accounts that would eventually be canonized into holy scripture. Luke described His approach this way:

“…it seemed good to me also…to write to you [Theophilus] an orderly account…” – Luke 1:3 NKJV

Sometimes it feels like our generation is the first one to be confused about Jesus; but that’s simply not true. Over the centuries, there’s been much disbelief, heretical teaching, and outright denial. Pride is nothing knew and false teaching is still happening (even in the information age). When it comes to “faith”, it’s imperative that one’s belief is specifically based on the truth of the Bible.

We live in a time where postmodern thought has influenced much of the teaching within Christian circles; with ideas about Jesus disconnected from the actual biblical text. The problem is that loosely referenced stories, general ideas, and feel-good teaching eventually break down under life’s pressure, or worse, can cause a person to miss the real gospel message altogether.

So, here’s a question, “Is the story of Jesus you believe an “orderly account?” No, not a commentary-style exposition, but “an orderly account”. Yes, it takes more effort to join the phrases “I believe” with “according to the Bible”, but it can have far-reaching effects on our personal faith and those we influence. May our lives communicate a gospel according to the Bible today…

Sustained

“Cotton candy” inspiration may be tasty, but the fluffy stuff just doesn’t last very long. Over the centuries, the people of God have faced rugged challenges and the Word of God has proven to be the only lasting source of nutrition and encouragement. Today may bring discouraging news, frustrations, or disappointment, but there is hope. For example, David was a man who knew what it meant to be “on the mountain”, but he also knew what it meant to be “in the valley”. Consider some powerful words he wrote about our Faithful God:

“The Lord is righteous in all His ways, gracious in all His works. The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He will also hear their cry and save them. The Lord preserves all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy. My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh shall bless His holy name forever and ever.” – Psalm 145:17-21 NKJV

Those aren’t words just meant for a greeting card, they’re inspired scripture meant to strengthen the very fibers of our being. Let them sink deep into your soul today so they can empower you to walk against the wind if need be, or simply keep going if there’s a temptation to quit. “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him…”

Advent – Week 3 – Joy

“Christian joy is a settled gladness rooted in the grace of Jesus Christ.”

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13 NKJV

Shamgar

Thought about Shamgar much lately?

Probably not. He was one of the Judges of Israel like Samson and Gideon. However, he rarely makes the cut for children’s Sunday School lessons because the entire biblical narrative of his life consist of only one verse. Take a look:

“After him [Ehud] was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad; and he also delivered Israel.” – Judges 3:31 NKJV

That’s it. The guy shows up out of nowhere swinging a big stick, gets the “honorable mention” and then disappears just as quick. But the important part is; he got the honorable mention. From that one verse we get some important facts:

  • God stepped in and delivered Israel (at His chosen time)
  • God included facts that were pertinent (Shamgar’s lineage, Philistines, six hundred enemy…dead)
  • God left out details we needn’t worry about (as He often does)
  • God used a unique method (not many “ox goad” stories in there)

Based on those facts, consider this:

  • Perhaps you’re feeling a little short on details right now; maybe they’re not really that relevant.
  • Perhaps the method God’s using to shape you right now doesn’t look like the average story; maybe that’s because your story is unique.
  • And perhaps God’s timing feels off; maybe that’s because He works on His own schedule.

Prayer: “Father your ways are unique. Thank you for the many times you’ve cared for me and how you’ve always proved yourself faithful. Please help me to trust you; even if I don’t have the whole story.”

Rain

There are points on the journey when life’s “weather” turns a sunny day into a dark rainy one. Those are the exact times when the words of Psalm 9 are most applicable. Somehow, making the decision to speak them aloud reveals a previously hidden trail to a spiritual shelter from the storm…

“I will praise You O Lord with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High…

The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; for You Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.”    – Psalm 9:1-2, 9-10 NKJV

Not forsaken. As a child of God, isn’t it incredible to know that you’re always remembered. There’s never a moment where you’re forgotten or out of The Most High’s sight. Speak the words so your heart can resonate with His goodness. Embrace the truth that brings strength to the deep parts of the soul. Praise His name for He is our refuge in times of trouble!

Moved

Have you ever experienced the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit? A presence more real and lasting than manufactured excitement? In our world, there are a lot of voices speaking all manner of spiritual talk, but there is only one voice that speaks transcendent, eternal truth; His. Consider what Peter wrote concerning the prophetic word:

“For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”    – 1 Peter 1:21 NKJV

Perhaps today there are many voices in your head (from various sources) giving spiritual advice; consider a simple return to the scripture. God never violates or contradicts His word, so it’s always the best place to be. Besides, without the Holy Spirit’s leading and involvement; it’s just activity with little or no power anyway. Don’t seek the things about Him; seek Him…seek His word…and be moved.

Wisdom 13.20

“He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.” – Proverbs 13:20 NIV

Over time, peers can influence our values, hopes, and dreams. The ideas and suggestions most often discussed around us will eventually affect choices, and the consequences that follow. So, when it comes to friends and mentors – choose wisely.
