Immanuel

What could be better than “God with us.”? For Joseph and Mary, the surroundings and circumstances of Jesus’ birth probably added to the long list of unanswered questions. What did it all mean?  In the midst of the chaos, there’s a moment Luke describes of calm serenity:

“But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.” – Luke 2:19 NKJV

Mary had something to bring a “stillness” to her heart in the middle of the uncertainty; she had a Baby-the physical presence of God. She didn’t know what the future held, but she knew she held the future in her arms. What a beautiful moment; a young mother pulling the face of God close to hers as she pondered His majesty. Over the next thirty-three years, how many times would she hug him and be reminded that God was with her?

For our moments of doubt and uncertainty, God is with us. As disciples of Christ, He’s promised never to leave us or forsake us (Matt. 28:20).

  • When there’s fear, Immanuel.
  • When there’s intimidation, Immanuel.
  • When there’s insecurity, Immanuel.
  • When there’s sorrow, Immanuel.
  • When there’s failure, Immanuel.
  • When there’s loneliness, Immanuel.
  • When there’s pain, Immanuel.
  • When there’s abandonment, Immanuel.

He is love, He is joy, He is peace; the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. What could be better than “God with us.”? Absolutely nothing.

Joseph

When it came to choosing a husband for His mom, Jesus chose Joseph. We know very little about him, but what information we have is significant. He was a Jewish tradesman with no special social status; but the comment about his character in Matthew is “just”. Here was a man of integrity making plans to start a family with his engaged, when life suddenly got complicated. His future wife revealed she was pregnant (obviously not his) and he had some decisions to make; and he chose compassion. When you also consider the nature of Mary’s character (one that warranted being chosen as the mother of Jesus), the shocking thought of her being promiscuous, must have crushed him. But thankfully, there’s more to the story.

An angel appeared to him, explaining that she had been faithful all along, and the Child was miraculously conceived. Then very succinctly, the scripture records that he, “did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife.” Regardless of the cloud of gossip they faced going forward, he took the Baby to the Temple for circumcision on the eighth day, named Him Jesus as instructed, and presented Him with the accompanying offering.

So, what’s the significance of Joseph? It’s this; he was a man who could be “entrusted”. He had an integrity about him that God could use. He may have built houses for a living, but God called him to build a home for the Messiah. Never underestimate the significance of your character, because in the end it determines your significance.

Wisdom 14.12

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” – Proverbs 14:12 NIV

At the end of it all, our opinions about “what’s right” will be irrelevant. Polling data, legal rulings, academic theories, and cultural norms will all be distance memories in the presence of the Almighty. So when it comes to what’s right, choose wisely…

Mary

What made Mary so special? Was it her appearance or sense of humor? Maybe she had amazing domestic skills and strong parental instincts? While we don’t know much about her daily habits and skillset, we do know a key ingredient in her character. It’s a component that’s on display when she responds to the angel’s announcements regarding her and Elizabeth. She says this:

Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” – Luke 1:38 NKJV

The key ingredient is “trust”. She trusted God. That may sound obvious and simple, but consider the context. She’s going along in life, making plans to set up housekeeping as any young Jewish girl would have been doing while engaged, and a strange person tells her she’s going to get pregnant before marriage. Unlike today, that was a socially terminal black-mark that nobody wanted. But she said, “Let it be to me according to your word.”

God knew her heart. Mary most likely had a beautiful spirit about her, and it came from a heart rich in trust for her Lord. The mother of our Savior trusted the One she would soon hold and care for; that’s why He chose her. Do you trust Him today? Do you trust Him “…according to His word”?

When Saying “The Word”

In our culture, there’s an increasing amount of those incorporating secular ideas and philosophy into their “spiritual” beliefs. In regards to that, I was recently reminded of an amazing tidbit:

In the city of Ephesus around the year 500 BC a Greek philosopher named Heraclitus started teaching an idea about a “unified ordering principle”. The concept was that all things related to physics, mathematics, reason, morality etc. were tied back and rooted in this cosmic “unified ordering principle”. Later the Stoic philosophers added their thoughts and referred to the “unified ordering principle” as a “divine animating”.

Interestingly, John the Apostle was exiled for a period of years on an island near Ephesus called Patmos, where he received the Revelation. He’s also credited with 3 epistles bearing his name and ultimately a gospel. After the exile on Patmos, John ministered in the city of Ephesus. It’s in that historical context, that John wrote his personal account of the Christ.

By the way, Heraclitus used a name for which he referred to his idea of a “unified ordering principle”, he called it “Logos” or “The Word”. For centuries, philosophers and students had contemplated the depth of what Heraclitus called “Logos”. Then John, under the leadership of the Holy Spirit took pen in hand and boldly articulated the true meaning:

“In the beginning was the Word (Logos), and the Word (Logos) was with God, and the Word (Logos) was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” – John 1:1-5 NKJV

So, in truth, “what’s new” is something very old. Trying to explain the cosmos, life, morality, etc. with logic or abstract ideas has been around a long time. It’s in this context that we live and the answer is still the same; “In the beginning was the Word…”

The Lord’s Day 12-18-16

“Therefore by Him, let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name.” – Hebrews 13:15 NKJV

Have you made the decision to praise Him today? Even though days and moods may change, our incredible God never does. He’s ALWAYS worthy. Have you spoken to Him yet?

Orderly

Confusion can produce all kinds of mistakes; even fatal errors. For those alive in the years following Christ’s resurrection, there was a lot of confusion concerning Jesus. Many had encountered Him during His travels, heard stories, knew someone healed, and so forth, but the picture each person had was limited to their own perspective. Then, at just the right time, the Holy Spirit began moving in the hearts of certain men to write down accounts that would eventually be canonized into holy scripture. Luke described His approach this way:

“…it seemed good to me also…to write to you [Theophilus] an orderly account…” – Luke 1:3 NKJV

Sometimes it feels like our generation is the first one to be confused about Jesus; but that’s simply not true. Over the centuries, there’s been much disbelief, heretical teaching, and denial. Pride is nothing knew and false teaching is still happening (even in the information age). And when it comes to “faith”, it’s imperative that one’s belief is specifically based on the truth of the Bible.

We live in a time where postmodern thought has influenced much of the teaching within Christian circles; with ideas about Jesus disconnected from the actual biblical text. Loosely referenced stories, and general ideas eventually break down under life’s pressure, or worse, cause a person to miss the real gospel message altogether.

So, here’s a question, “Is the story of Jesus you believe and tell an “orderly account?” No, not a commentary-style exposition, but “an orderly account”. Yes, it takes more effort to join the phrases “I believe” with “according to the Bible”, but it can have far-reaching effects (on our personal faith and those we influence). May our lives communicate a gospel according to the Bible today…

Sustained

“Cotton candy inspiration” may be sweet, but it doesn’t last. Over the centuries, the people of God have faced challenges of many kinds and the Word of God has proven to be the only lasting source of encouragement. Today may bring discouraging news, frustrating situations, or disappointment in people, but there is hope. For example, David was a man who knew what it meant to be “on the mountain”, but he also knew what it meant to be “in the valley”. Consider some powerful words he wrote about our Faithful God:

“The Lord is righteous in all His ways, gracious in all His works. The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He will also hear their cry and save them. The Lord preserves all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy. My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh shall bless His holy name forever and ever.” – Psalm 145:17-21 NKJV

Those aren’t fluffy words just meant for a greeting card, they’re inspired scripture meant to strengthen the very fibers of our being. Let them sink deep into your spirit today so they can empower you to walk against the wind if need be, or simply keep going if there’s a temptation to quit. “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him…”

Wisdom 13.20

“He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.” – Proverbs 13:20 NIV

Over time, peers can influence our values, hopes, and dreams. The ideas and suggestions most often discussed around us will eventually affect choices, and the consequences that follow. So, when it comes to friends and mentors – choose wisely.

Shamgar

Thought about the guy Shamgar much lately?

And now you’re thinking, “Who is that?” Well, he was one of the Judges of Israel like Samson and Gideon. However, he rarely makes the cut for children’s Sunday School lessons because the entire biblical narrative of his life consist of only one verse. Take a look:

“After him [Ehud] was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad; and he also delivered Israel.” – Judges 3:31 NKJV

That’s it. The guy shows up out of nowhere swinging a big stick, gets the “honorable mention” and then disappears just as quick. But the important part is; he got the honorable mention. From that one verse we get some important facts:

  • God stepped in and delivered Israel (at His chosen time)
  • God included facts that were pertinent (Shamgar’s lineage, Philistines, six hundred and dead)
  • God left out details we needn’t worry about (as He often does)
  • God used a unique method (not many “ox goad” stories in there)

Based on those facts, consider this:

  • Perhaps you’re feeling a little short on details right now; maybe they’re not really that relevant.
  • Perhaps the method God’s using to shape you right now doesn’t look like the average story; maybe that’s because your story is unique.
  • And perhaps God’s timing feels off; maybe that’s because He works on His own schedule.

Prayer: “Father your ways are unique. Thank you for the many times you’ve cared for me and how you’ve always proved yourself faithful. Please help me to trust you; even if I don’t have the whole story.”

Rain

There are points on the journey when life’s “weather” turns a sunny day into a dark rainy one. Those are the exact times when the words of Psalm 9 are most applicable. Somehow, making the decision to speak them aloud reveals a previously hidden trail to a shelter from the storm…

“I will praise You O Lord with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High…

The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; for You Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.”    – Psalm 9:1-2, 9-10 NKJV

Not forsaken. As a child of God, isn’t it incredible to know that you’re always remembered. There’s never a moment where you’re forgotten or out of The Most High’s sight. Speak the words so your heart can resonate with His goodness. Embrace the truth that brings strength to the deep parts of the soul. Praise His name for He is our refuge in times of trouble!

The Lord’s Day 12-11-16

“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust…” – Psalm 18:2a

Today would be a great day to pause and reflect on God’s strength, protection and provision. Is He your fortress? Is He your deliverer? Will you commit this day into His hands and declare your trust? “This is the day the Lord has made…”

Moved

Have you ever experienced the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit? A presence more real and lasting than manufactured excitement? In our world, there are a lot of voices speaking all manner of spiritual talk, but there is only one voice that speaks transcendent, eternal truth; His. Consider what Peter wrote concerning the prophetic word:

“For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”    – 1 Peter 1:21 NKJV

Perhaps today there are many voices in your head (from various sources) giving spiritual advice; consider a simple return to the scripture. God never violates or contradicts His word, so it’s always the best place to be. Besides, without the Holy Spirit’s leading and involvement; it’s just activity with little or no power anyway. Don’t seek the things about Him; seek Him…seek His word…and be moved.

Opinions

Each day, there are endless opinions printed, posted, tweeted, spoken, shouted and displayed on protest signs and bumper stickers; but at the end of it all these words will still be true:

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bring forth its fruit in due season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.

The ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish.” – Psalm 1:1-6 NKJV

As believers, we must choose to focus our attention on the refreshing truth of God and not worry over the presence of the misguided; no matter how loud and obnoxious they are. Their apparent “wins” can displace the peace within us if we allow them to, but God says the way of the unrighteous will perish and it’s only the noise of a doomed agenda.

So what opinions are influencing you today and from what source does they come?

Joshua

In a culture that’s traded absolute truth for tolerance, the concept of a line in the sand regarding values may be considered extreme. However, in a similar environment, Joshua (as leader of the Hebrews after Moses) made a bold statement doing exactly that. Take a look:

“And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the river, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”     – Joshua 24:15 NKJV

Joshua’s statement in verse 15 comes after a brief recounting of God’s faithfulness to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses. It wasn’t a random comment, it was deliberate and in stark contrast to the world that offered all kinds of pagan pleasures around them. Joshua’s statement was not only bold, it also represented the way he led his household; which was to follow God’s standards.

The truth is, an obedient life has always been a contrast to the lost world. It’s been true since the beginning when Abel’s life contrasted Cain’s.

So where are your lines? Have you taken a stand and said “As for me and my house…”? It’s not a phrase to be uttered lightly – “Choose for yourselves this day…”

Wisdom 13.10

“By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well-advised is wisdom.” – Proverbs 13:10 NKJV

Prudent decisions rarely come from knee-jerk reactions, and if we’re not careful self-centered thoughts and peer-pressure can affect our judgment. Counsel that lines up with biblical principles is always the one to trust, even if it goes against “conventional wisdom” or personal preferences.

Remembrance

Sometimes it’s good to pause and linger on these truths…

“Remember the former things, those of long ago,

I am God, and there is no other;

I am God, and there is none like Me.”

(The gods of this world are dead. The belief systems of this world are powerless, but our God is unmatched and indescribable…)

“I make known the end from the beginning,

from ancient times, what is still to come.

I say: My purpose will stand,

and I will do all that I please.”

(From the start, He saw both ends of time. His ways are unpredictable and beyond our limits…)

“From the east I summon a bird of prey;

from a far-off land, a man to fulfill My purpose

What I have said, that I will bring about;

what I have planned, that I will do.

– Isaiah 46:9-11 NIV

(His word is sure, His heart is true, His hand is steady, and His way is best!)

Encouragement

Our souls long to know there’s more to this life than what we see.

In the daily routine, there can be ups, downs, and even boredom. Relationships can bring encouragement, but quite often; discouragement. The first century Christians knew the taste of discouragement. They knew what it was like to look out over their own cities and know the tide of public opinion had turned against them. They knew what it felt like to be lied about, threatened and rejected by those who once welcomed them.

Peter, a man who knew the ups and downs of a spiritual journey, wrote letters of encouragement and challenge. He had first-hand knowledge of personal failure, but he wrote these great words to remind us how to soar:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved for you in heaven.” – 1 Peter 1:3-4 NKJV

If the foundations of your soul need strengthening today, perhaps these anchors will help secure them:

  • Abundant mercy (lavish and gracious)
  • Living hope (alive and new every morning)
  • Inheritance incorruptible (untouchable by the world)
  • Reserved for you (He knows your name)

May these truths encourage your spirit today…

The Lord’s Day 12-4-16

Lives can be changed this very day. It could be in a worship you’re attending, or in another part of the world you’ll never visit. May we be praying for salvations, praying against strongholds, praying for hearts to receive the message and for the speaker to communicate God’s truth in the power of the Holy Spirit.

“The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth.” – Psalm 145:18

Boundaries

Who sets the boundaries of your steps?

Along the path of life there are many speaking their own version of truth, including various offers to “taste-test” savory concessions as you pass by. One of the common calls from the shadows is the phrase, “Follow your heart.” On the surface, those words may sound right, but for a follower of Christ, the qualifying question should be, “Does it match the desires of God’s heart?” Consider the counsel of a wise and experienced man:

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, and preserves the way of His saints.” – Proverbs 2:6-8 NKJV

Today there could be an opportunity to speak a word of instruction; may the counsel come from His knowledge. An opportunity to share an opinion could present itself; may it be rooted in His wisdom. New invitations could appear around the corner; may His Word be the standard for comparing the options. And sometimes, those conversations happen only within our own mind, as we try to decide a next step. Who will set the boundaries of your path today?
