Neighborly

“Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” – Romans 13:10 NKJV

What does it mean to be a “good neighbor”? Is it watching out for another’s property while they’re on vacation? Putting someone’s trash container away? Or taking a meal during a sickness? Very simply, it’s “Christlikeness”. In Romans chapters 12-13, Paul is talking about “putting on Christ” in every circle of our life. Whether it’s vocational or personal, he says to “live peaceably” and “walk properly”. He even says to respect government officials and pay taxes with a good attitude. That can be especially challenging when the leaders aren’t very “respectable”. However, considering the political context in which he wrote those words, it’s hard to justify not doing so.

At the end of the day, to “put on Christ” is going beyond being neighborly to those who are neighborly, and doing so to the ones who aren’t. Often that takes the empowering of the Holy Spirit; and in His power today, may we be “good neighbors”.

Overcoming

Evil is restless.

It’s never content with marginal status, and the Bible teaches that a proper defense is actually a posture of offense. In Romans chapter 12, there’s a series of directives given for the active, grace-filled life. There are things like authentic love, kindness, diligence in hospitality, empathy with those hurting, rejoicing with those who are happy, a humble attitude, and pursuing peace with all who are willing. And at the end of the chapter there’s this:

“Do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good.” –Romans 12:21 NKJV

Over the centuries, many have been overcome. Again, evil is restless. God told Cain that sin was at his door, and ready to pounce; but Cain held onto his feelings toward Abel and was overcome. King Saul was once friendly toward David, but jealously crept in and he was overcome. The early church was experiencing love and fellowship, but then posturing, pettiness and pride showed up; and many were overcome.

How about you today? Will you “cling to what is good”? What will your posture of offense look like? Perhaps there’s a particular situation needing diffusion. Perhaps there’s a person in need of a conversation. Or perhaps there’s a need for some prayerful honesty. “Overcome evil with good…”

Wisdom 6.16

“The Lord hates six things; in fact, seven are detestable to Him: arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that plots wicked schemes, feet eager to run to evil, a lying witness who gives false testimony, and one who stirs up trouble among brothers.” – Proverbs 6:16-19 HCSB

In today’s culture where love is often the sole character trait attributed to God, those words are a strong contrast to the “soft old grandfather figure” many imagine. The motives and schemes of people are clearly known to the Lord and nothing “slips” past Him. We must remember that His pattern throughout scripture is patience and forgiveness, but when He takes action, it’s swift, decisive, and final.

A Word Fitly Spoken

Who needs you today? As Paul was building on his statement to be “living sacrifices”, he mentioned this:

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” – Romans 12:15 NKJV

So who needs you today? You have the opportunity to be part of improving someone’s personal weather forecast from “rainy” to “partly sunny” through a simple note, text, or comment. Your words can be powerful. A compliment can lift a spirit, encouragement can motivate a tired soul, a loving challenge can alter a future and asking forgiveness can soften a heart. Proverbs 25:11 reminds us:

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver”

It’s not rocket science, but your friend probably doesn’t need a scientist today as much as they need you.

Thinking Soberly

Drunken decisions are less wise than sober, because thoughts are better without impairment.

Incidentally, the idea of clear, sober thinking is how Paul finishes up his thorough discussion of sin, faith, law, and grace (Romans Ch.1-11). Starting off chapter 12, he says to walk as “living sacrifices”, being transformed in thinking, and then gives these instructions for the disciple to ponder along the way:

“…not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.” – Romans 12:3b NKJV

Stop and consider the full meaning of grace. Without it there would be no hope of knowing God or serving Him; and as a servant in His Kingdom, there is only one rank…“Redeemed”.

How will you finish this statement today, “God has dealt with me…”?

The Lord’s Day 10-7-18

“I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure.” – Psalm 16:8-9 NIV

Life is filled with people and circumstances (both good and bad) that can draw our attention away from God. Today, prayerfully look beyond it all and see the Mighty King of Heaven in His glory. Celebrate His majesty, gain strength from His presence, and find rest in His protection. He is worthy of our worship and praise!

Unsearchable

Israel rejected Jesus as the Messiah.

He was in their temple, marketplaces and homes; yet many didn’t embrace Him as Lord. The long-awaited moment had come for the introduction of the promised King…and the majority chose not to follow. For that reason, Paul said their branch was “broken off” and a new one grafted in. However, the Bible also says they can be grafted in again upon turning to belief in Christ (Romans 11:17-24).

There was a clear change in direction with the birth of the Church, but not a total rejection of His chosen people. His hand was righteously firm, but without a spite-filled vindictive attitude. God’s ways are higher than ours and so are His actions. Paul summed it up this way:

“Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!” –Romans 11:33 NKJV

He’s beyond our ability to completely define, but is always consistent in character. That means, growing as a disciple is more about learning His nature, than about “figuring Him out”.

So, how do you pray? Is it for answers, or do you desire a conversation? Knowing Christ is about fellowship. Are you listening? Or just talking? Unsearchable…oh the depths.

Advice

Have you ever been asked for advice?

Or perhaps circumstances have compelled you to offer advice to someone not asking for it; like your child, student, subordinate, friend, or family member. Either way, when it comes to right and wrong, what should differentiate a follower of Christ’s counsel from random thoughts? After all, many people who don’t know Christ have years of life experience. What’s different about godly counsel?

The answer: It’s the “non-negotiable” parts of the conversation.

As disciples, we’re to look specifically to God’s Word for “framing” life experiences. And when we recount those experiences to others, they should also be framed by God’s Word. For example, Paul wasn’t shy about his Damascus road conversion, but he didn’t solely rely on feelings and emotions to put it in perspective either. He drew from the words of the prophets and patriarchs to frame it. He was always tying his points back to the scriptures. Consider his words:

“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”–Romans 10:17 NKJV

Whether it’s a feeling, a relationship, or an experience; look to God’s Word to interpret and process it. And when you give counsel, be sure to frame it according to God’s Word as well. It doesn’t necessarily mean you quote chapter and verse, but it’s about consistency with the principles of the Bible; and that’s when you know you’re giving “good advice”.

Pottery

Clay pottery is a common artifact discovered in archeological digs.

It’s often valued for the clues it reveals about the ancient contents and who made it. Someone gathered the material, envisioned a designed, fashioned the clay, and fired it in an oven. The stories told by pottery pieces are about sourcing, purpose, creativity, beauty and more.

As disciples, we too are formed by the hand of someone who gathered the material, envisioned a design, fashioned the clay, and fired it in the oven. Afterwards, the challenge for the finished “pottery” is the “purpose” part. Sometimes, there’s a lack of understanding the role, but often time, it’s a lack of appreciation of the role, not the understanding of it. In those moments, it’s good to remember who did the creating, and who still has the power over the pottery:

“Does not the potter have power over the clay…?” –Romans 9:21 NKJV

Do you understand your role for this day? Do you appreciate it, or do you struggle against it? Are you working to fulfill your role in a way that honors Christ? Pottery should reveal clues about the Maker…

Wisdom 5.21

“For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the Lord, and He watches all his paths.” – Proverbs 5:21 NASB

There is no secret life before the Lord. All we do, think or imagine is an open book to Him. Thankfully, He provided the scriptures for direction, but we must read them. The Holy Spirit will also guide us, but we must follow. And along with those two wonderful helps, He offers gracious forgiveness, but we must confess. What will be “your way” today?

Convinced

What gave Paul confidence? In other words, as the road got more rugged, what kept hope alive inside him?

Well, to begin with, he wasn’t someone who relied on fables or “hope-so” religion. He was trained at an early age to study the scriptures intensely and base conclusions on it. At conversion, he then began a journey of knowing Christ personally to go along with his vast knowledge of the sacred text. Ultimately, after years of ministry, and extreme circumstances, he wrote these words to articulate his personal, rock-solid conclusion regarding Christ’s faithfulness:

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of Christ.” –Romans 8:38-39 NIV

Those words reveal a deep, abiding hope. Have you ever considered that absolutely, positively nothing can separate us from the love of Christ? Absolutely nothing. As disciples, we don’t earn God’s love, nor is it dependent on how we feel. He chooses to love us and there’s not one thing the enemy can do to change it, except try to convince us otherwise. Have you thanked Him for that today? Are you walking in the confidence of it?

If God is for Us

Some items have significant worth, even if their monetary value is low.

For example, a loved one’s photo may be worthless on an auction site, but priceless to you. It’s often described as having “sentimental value”. As followers of Christ, God places a certain value on us personally. And He not only values us, He protects us as well. As a matter of fact, these incredible words of encouragement sum it up:

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” –Romans 8:31 NKJV

And if that’s not enough to fortify your soul, consider this verse to go with it:

“Yet in all these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” –Romans 8:37 NKJV

It doesn’t matter what value others place on you because God’s accounting is all that really matters. We’re kept by his hand, and that’s a secure place to be.

What brings fear to your heart today? Is it intimidating people, challenging situations, or maybe the unknown? Remember who watches over you, then walk in His strength. “If God is for you, who can be against you?”

The Lord’s Day 9-30-18

“But I trust in Your unfailing love, my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, for He has been good to me.” – Psalm 13:5-6 NIV

God’s love is pure and absolute. With Him, there are no ulterior motives or selfish pretenses. Does your heart trust Him? Do you rejoice in the amazing privilege of knowing Him? He is good…may His name be praised today!

Family

It’s been said that “blood is thicker than water”, but what is it that makes family…family?

The most obvious answer is birth, but then there’s adoption and marriage that also join people into the bonds of family. In each case, there’s a common link. For example, the parents of children are the connection to the grandparents, the spouse is the link to the in-laws, and in Romans chapter 8 the Bible says the Holy Spirit links the believer to Christ. Verse 16 says this:

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”

His ministry is intimate and far-reaching. In the previous verses Paul says those who are in Christ are alive in the Spirit and are sons of God through Him as adopted children; welcomed into God’s presence as a child crying “Daddy!” Our Father knows, loves, and provides for us as part of His household. We’re welcomed to relax in the “family room”, at the “family table”, and at “family reunions” among other believers.

Are you living according to the Spirit’s guidance as He “bears witness” with your spirit? Do you have an appreciation for the rest of God’s family, or is there a tendency to act like an “only child”? You’re part of His family; take comfort in the strength of those bonds today…

Not Guilty!

“Not guilty!” Upon hearing that declaration, what would an exonerated person be thinking? Thanks? Joy? Things-to-do? Freedom? All-the-above?! For the believer, there’s also such a declaration:

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus…” – Romans 8:1 NKJV

The Righteous Judge has looked at the evidence, heard the arguments of the Accuser, considered the presentation of the Advocate and declared the followers of Christ, “Not guilty!” And by the way, His decision is final. So, what should be on the mind of one walking out of the spiritual courtroom and into freedom? Paul says it should be a mind that’s “set” on the things of the Spirit (8:5). It’s a determined focus on what’s important to Him; in a spirit of joy, letting the Holy Spirit work in and through us to accomplish the will of the Father. He leads the way, and we humbly follow as ones declared, “Not-Guilty!” Breathe in the fresh air of liberty today and live!

Wisdom 4.23

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” – Proverbs 4:23 NIV

The enemy is always scattering seeds of doubt, fear, anger, lust, jealousy (and other things) that aren’t of the Lord. The battle to keep a heart healthy is a daily struggle; and the Lord is the only one who can renew it. “Above all else, guard your heart…”

Newness

What’s so special about a sunrise?

For some it’s the beauty, for others it marks the end of a night shift, and for commuters, a companion in the early hours. Regardless of your appreciation, a sunrise represents the beginning of a new day. In a similar way, the Bible speaks of newness. Romans 6:4 describes the picture of us being buried with Christ in His death and raised to walk in “newness of life”. The life of a disciple is filled with newness, and each day is an opportunity to walk in it.

So what is walking in “newness”? It’s a deliberate posture of turning one’s back to sin, and seeing each day as one filled with:

  • Purpose that is ordained of the Lord
  • Forgiveness that brings liberty
  • Boundaries that provide a framework for success
  • Opportunities that present fresh experiences with the Lord

Is your spiritual posture turned away from sin? What area of your life needs refreshment? Do you see this day as one filled with newness? It can be…

Three Reasons Why I’m Praying for Judge Kavanaugh’s Confirmation

Occasionally, a political situation will move me to prayer and the nomination process of Brett Kavanaugh is one of them. Here are three simple reasons why I’m praying for his confirmation:

  • He has a track record of being committed to the “rule of law”. As boring of a subject as it is, our civilization literally depends on the rule of law being respected in the court system (which has been increasingly undermined by political activism, legal bullying and emotional appropriation).
  • He has been thoroughly vetted by both parties. The circus that was supposed to be a serious committee hearing involved thousands of documents, many private interviews and over-the-top public challenges. Within that context, there were no disqualifying issues to prevent a yes or no vote.
  • He is now the target of a blatant political assault. It is painfully obvious that the last-minute accusations toward Judge Kavanaugh are rooted in a political agenda and not justice. His personal destruction has become the goal, and if they succeed, it will signal that no conservative is safe from coordinated, systematic elimination (even with a decades-long, impeccable record).

I get it, politics may not be your thing, but unfortunately the political left is determined to push it into every single corner of our life. This nasty, ugly process shows the depth of their resolve. From the overwhelming amount of personal testimony from men and women who’ve worked with Judge Kavanaugh over the years, he’s known as an honest and decent man. It appears that Washington is hostile to both qualities, but we must still seek and live out both.

Demonstration

Talk is cheap.

The words “I love you” mean very little if not backed up with action. For example, it may only take a few moments for a bride & groom to say “I do”, but it’ll take a lifetime of “I do” to show it. In the Bible, there’s also a concise statement of love. It’s found in 1 John 4:8, and teaches the principle of “God is love”. It’s a wonderful declaration, but He didn’t stop with just saying it. He backed it up with this:

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8 NKJV

So how does a disciple demonstrate love? It can be speaking the words, “I love you”, but more often than not, it requires action. It could possibly even require taking the first step. Consider God’s model of love:

  • God knows humanity’s past, but still chooses to love…that’s God’s way.
  • He knows people can be fickle, but still chooses to love…that’s God’s way.
  • He knows not all will respond, but still chooses to love…that’s God’s way.

What’s your way? How will you demonstrate love to others? How will you show God your love for Him? Will it be just words, or will it include actions?

“But God demonstrates His own love…”

Unwavering

Have you ever been unsure of something?

Perhaps it was about a decision or your ability to perform under pressure. In Abraham’s life, there were some very unsure moments. However, the heavenly statement about his life reads this way:

“He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,” – Romans 4:20

How can someone who struggled at times end up being known as “unwavering”? Well, Paul goes on to say this in the next verse:

“And being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.” – Romans 4:21

He trusted God. As one commentator said of Abraham’s faith, it was “fully developed”. He knew his past struggles, and he knew the obvious challenge of having children as older adults; but his trust in God’s abilities was stronger than the doubt in his own. He kept moving forward in his faith and it continued to get more focused every day. He was convinced that God would be faithful, regardless of what made sense, and it was “accounted to him as righteousness”.

Where is your trust? Is it directly in the Lord’s faithfulness, or is it dependent on a combination of things “going right”. What do you need to trust Him with today?
